GENERAL DEFINITION: The purpose of the position is to provide Optical services to assist patients in selecting frames, obtaining proper fitting measurements, and provide repairs and adjustment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Program Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.

DUTIES:

Responsible for servicing patients with their optical needs and direct services of the vision center to ensure products and services quality.

Lab Technician responsibilities:

  • Receives, records, and analyzes prescription specifications to interpret correct ordered eyewear products.

  • Assist patients with obtaining prescriptions from external agencies.

  • Performs routine calibration to appropriate equipment.

  • Insert fabricated lenses from Lab into frames.

  • Take accurate frame and lens measurements.

  • Fabricate, groove and edge lenses in accordance with prescriptions operating the edger equipment for frame mounts.

  • Consult with patients concerning lens prescriptions, modifications and adjustments as needed.

  • Verify lens fabrications and finished frame match optical prescriptions.

  • Ensure correct pricing and delivery time quotes to patients to create accurate invoices.

  • Assembles and verifies prescription eyewear received from optical laboratories to meet prescription specifications.

    Optical Dispensing responsibilities:

  • Assist patients to determine best match eyewear in identifying lifestyle needs and delivers recommendations to providing patients quality and care for eyewear needs.

  • Create an accurate estimate of the cost of the eyewear.

  • Recommends specific lenses, lens coatings and frames to suit patient needs, occupation, habits, and facial features.

  • Performs repairs, adjustments and deliveries of eyewear to verify accuracy of completed eyewear.

  • Handle patient questions and concerns in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Follow proper protocols of all program assets, including inventory, tools and equipment.

  • Perform office maintenance cleaning responsibilities to organized work areas.

  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory tools and equipment in accordance with manual specifications.

  • Order, track and maintain lens and supply inventory on a daily basis to ensure adequate supplies of optical materials.

  • Assist Medicaid and MCO (Manage Care Organization) member with their eyewear needs.

    Performs other duties related to position as necessary.

  • Prepares monthly Narrative Reports and Data Collections.

  • Create a file for patients and scan supporting documents into our Electronic Health Records.

  • Update Frame Gallery by deleting discontinued frames and inputting new frames into our system.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of optical terminology, technology, and proper operation of optical equipment. Knowledge of understanding of all aspects related to operations of a modern optical dispensary. Knowledge of inventory and records management, vision insurance, and basic financial management. Knowledge of basic mathematics and algebra. Skilled to provide quality customer service. Skilled to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills. Skilled to demonstrate customer service-oriented attitude and behavior being empathetic with patients’ needs and concerns. Skilled to operate office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, fax machines, and filing cabinets. Skilled in using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. Ability to interpret prescription. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Ability to use independent judgment with minimum supervision. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to communicate in English and Zuni language. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with Tribal Employees and the general public.

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Associates degree in ophthalmic dispensing or optometric technology; with three (3) years of related work experience in dispensary operations. OR Certificate in Opticianry with five (5) years of work experience in dispensary operations.

    LICENSE & CERTIFICATION: Valid New Mexico Driver’s License with no DWI/DUI convictions with in the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The position requires minor physical exertion such as periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven surfaces, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The position may require recurring lifting of lightweight objects with infrequent bending or stooping alternating with the lighter activities. The position requires minimal agility and dexterity. Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

    SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. The position is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must undergo and successfully pass a thorough character background check including FBI Fingerprint Check.
