Overview:
There is a Legal Investigator vacancy with Yakima County Department of Assigned Counsel. This position is responsible for conducting investigations in criminal cases preparatory to trial or other resolutions for the Department of Assigned Counsel.

Responsibilities:
Essential Duties:
Reviews and evaluates incoming requests for investigation by staff and contract attorneys to ensure no conflict exists for in-house investigation; assigns cases to contract investigators and ensures that the outgoing product is timely and professional. Reviews and evaluates results with attorneys to ensure investigations are being handled properly.
Participates in the development of theories of defense with staff attorneys. Discusses and analyzes criminal cases with attorneys to assist in developing and refining defense which includes critical review and analysis of law enforcement and other agency documents in order to determine avenues of investigation.
Develops information for use by defense counsel in case preparation by: conducting interviews, reviewing and analyzing discovery of materials, examining evidence and crime scenes and other methods of detection. Prepares investigation reports for attorney use in criminal court.
Locates witnesses who have moved or relocated, serves subpoenas, and prepares affidavits of service to further assist in the preparation of cases.
Coordinates the scheduling of interviews with attorneys, victims, and witnesses, prioritizes the investigation and interviews witnesses, victims and suspects.
Testifies in court and coordinates witnesses and evidence for court presentation.
Participates in making staffing decisions by analyzing caseloads and reporting results to the Director of Assigned Counsel.
Works with the Director of Assigned Counsel in developing investigative policies and procedures that will meet the needs of attorneys and clients and that ensure the investigative product of staff is effective and professional. Assists the Director in the development of departmental policies and procedures with respect to the management of investigations and investigative relationships with other agencies.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or a related field OR an equivalent combination of experience or training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
