Joining Collins Aerospace isn’t just about finding a job; it’s about embarking on a journey to redefine the future of aerospace technology.

What YOU will do

  • Generate FEM (Finite Element Model) mesh of commercial aircraft seating from 3D CAD geometric model supplied by design using pre-processor computer software programs such as Altair HyperMesh, MSC Patran. Apply dynamic, static loads and boundary conditions based on engineering judgment of the primary load paths onto the meshed FEM of the seat structure to simulate for the critical aircraft emergency conditions (such as 9G, 16G forward crash, 14G vertical dive & 4G side gust / turbulence) provided by the seating certification department to meet the FAA 14 CFR Part 25.561, 25.562 regulations for commercial aircraft seating.

  • Apply fatigue loads on seating FEM to simulate reliability / cyclic fatigue loading conditions that cause premature failure of seating components.

  • Solve aircraft seating FEM load cases in LS-DYNA, Altair OptiStruct, MSC Nastran solvers using High Performance Computing (HPC).

  • Evaluate results and output from the FEA to drive and conduct design trades, optimizations and final product configuration definitions considering safety, strength, weight, cost & producibility.

  • Utilize FEA for aircraft seating to support airworthiness Compliance By Analysis (CBA) and to justify reduction of full-scale destructive physical testing.

  • Actively participate and support in Kaizen and lean events organized for aircraft seating FEA standard work improvements to achieve greater accuracy in the prediction of seating structural behavior.

  • Submit structural FEA reports to certification team to qualify aircraft seating for TSO (Technical Service Order) C127c and transmittal to airworthiness authority (EASA, FAA) and external customers – Boeing, Airbus etc. These duties involve structural analysis on commercial aircraft seating systems using Altair HyperMesh, MSC Patran software as preprocessor to develop the Finite Element Model (FEM) from a Computer Aided Design (CAD) 3D model which is developed using NX CAD which the Engineering department provides.

    Qualifications You Must Have

  • Must possess a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field and at least 8 years of progressive experience in a role performing structural analysis using FEA tools. In the alternative, at least a master's degree or its equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field and at least 5 years of experience in a role performing structural analysis using FEA tools would be acceptable.

  • Must possess at least 5 years of experience with fatigue analysis using FEA software.

  • Must possess at least 5 years of experience translating actual problem to the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model, interpreting analysis results, and selecting the best solution.

  • Must possess at least 5 years of experience with investigating opportunities to limit required testing and reduce certification costs with FEA analysis.

  • Must possess demonstrable knowledge of CAE software including HyperMesh/ LSDYNA/Nastran, HyperView/LS-PREPOST.
