The Challenge

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Winston-Salem Construction team.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as a project roadway/structure inspector supporting senior engineers in the administration of highway construction contracts.
  • Monitor contractors daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
  • Perform contract administration duties, such as pay record entry/reviews, materials-received reports, certified payroll reviews, daily diary reviews, as-constructed plans preparation, and monthly quantity verifications prior to estimate payment.
  • Resolve daily constructability issues and troubleshoot problems to mitigate delays to project delivery.
  • Assist other NCDOT staff and contractors in utility relocation efforts by inspecting and tracking relocation work.
  • Anticipate contract problems and advise engineering staff of the need for plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments to improve safety, timely delivery, and/or quality of delivered project.
  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure compliance with subcontract agreements and with the contract Disadvantaged Business Enterprise requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act.
  • Ensure all work performed in permitted areas is done in accordance with permits.
  • Direct and schedule work of junior technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to contract documents in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from senior engineers.
  • Be directly involved with the leadership, management, counseling, and training of NCDOT and contractor junior technicians.
  • Communicate and coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners to minimize delays and disturbances while maximizing progress of the projects.

What You Bring

Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans.

Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.

Advanced working knowledge of math functions (i.e. algebra, geometry, and trigonometry).

Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.

Customer service experience related to solving problems involving explaining engineering concepts to customer groups.

Ability to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.

Solid verbal and written communications skills to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.

Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
