Description of Work

This position will serve as Sign Supervisor in the Division 4 Traffic Services unit. This employee will be responsible for the supervision over Sign Erectors and must be able to counsel, discipline, and train employees. They would also need to be able to assist with technical problems, ensure employees complete necessary training, complete annual performance evaluations, and will be involved in interviewing and recommending candidates for their assigned positions.

Other duties include overseeing and monitoring the systematic replacement of signs; planning and coordinating the installation of signs and traffic control devices for projects and daily work activities; supervising the installation of emergency and planned detours and updating the online Traveler Incident Management System (TIMS) as needed; providing expertise in reviewing plans for installation of signs; maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory using written records and data entry in MMS and various electronic programs; inspecting equipment to ensure proper servicing and maintenance; performing field inspections at worksites; attending and assisting with conducting monthly safety meetings for the Traffic Services unit; assisting with investigating and answering or meeting with the public regarding sign complaints.

This position will require work in various weather conditions and high traffic areas. It will be subject to emergency call back, requiring work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge in Advance Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety practices

  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew

  • Experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control safety devices which includes, highway signs, pavement markings, traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) devices

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used

  • Experience in emergency response for inclement weather and sign maintenance

Additional Expectations:

Employee must have the ability to supervise personnel, interpret and apply personnel policies, ability to use sound judgement and initiative in roadway signing operations. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills for reports, letter writing, and daily contact with the public, other DOT Departments, public officials, contractors, first responders, and employees of other governmental agencies. Must possess working knowledge of the MUTCD and NCDOT Standard Drawings / Specifications as they relate to signing traffic control devices. Must be able to traverse rough and uneven terrain. Must be able to operate a state vehicle. Position will require some climbing and bending.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
