Champion, expert, and technologist of BWRX-300 Plant I&C Systems Architecture and Design from “tops-down” and “peer-to-peer” systems engineering and requirements management perspective. Make technical decisions derived from Safety Strategy, Fault List, nuclear regulations, industry standards, etc. that are fact based, reasonable, and durable with impact on Control Systems designs. Demonstrates creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving challenging problems.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Senior Systems Engineer (LSE) for BWRX-300 Master Parts List (MPL) A32 – Plant Instrumentation and Control Engineering with the primary focus and scope of systems engineering and requirements management (RM) approach governing the overall integrated control system-of-systems (SOS) architecture and design covering the separate but related dimensions of requirements, design decisions, and interfaces derived from:

  • Plant, System, and Component “tops-down” design and

  • Intra- [i.e.; Controls] and Inter- Discipline [e.g.; Non-Controls] “peer-to-peer” interactions

  • Champion identification, elicitation, definition, attribution or characterization, and allocation to “C” Systems of requirements, design decisions, and interfaces from diverse sources:

  • Plant Level sources – Safety Strategy, Fault List, Deterministic (DSA) and Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA), Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Inspectability (RAMI), Human Factors (HF), Radiation, IAEA national nuclear regulations and guides, industry standards [IEC, IEEE, CSA], etc.

  • System Level sources – Mechanical, Electrical, Civil/Structural, etc.

  • Mentor others on BWRX-300 specific Safety Strategy, Fault List, and IAEA based Defense Line framework as well as associated safety categorization of functions and safety classification of structures, systems, components (SSCs), and equipment thereof.

  • Champion and mentor others in RM processes – Drive use of RM tool.

  • Prepare and maintain using data-centric digital tools with rigorous requirements, change control, and configuration management.

  • Perform design technical oversight, review, and verification of deliverables to ensure their adequacy in; accuracy, completeness, and compliance with requirements.

  • Lead technical assessment or problem solving reviews (PSRs), optioneering studies, root cause analyses, design reviews, etc. that are fact based, reasonable, and result in a durable impact on Control Systems designs.

  • Perform as key or first point of contact for Regulatory Affairs or Licensing for preparation or review and comment of; Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (PSAR), Preliminary Operating Safety Analysis Report (POSAR), and Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) Chapter 7 – Instrumentation & Control Systems [or equivalent], Licensing Topical Reports, Requests Additional (RAIs) or For Information (RFIs), etc.

  • Provide staff technical mentoring, guidance, oversight, competency, or qualification assessment with balanced, respectful mindset informed by creativity, foresight, mature judgement.

  • Champion knowledge capture and transfer, Lessons Learned, Best Practices, Design Guides, use of digital tools, etc.

  • Prepare technical papers, awards, and patents.

  • Participate in industry technical working groups.

  • Establish productive working relationships with; Engineering, Product and Project Management, other support functions, and both internal and external suppliers.

  • Deliver with integrity, safety and security, quality, then output at cost – Champion nuclear culture.

  • Support LEAN, Design To Cost, Value Engineering, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering for Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Computer Science or Technology, Software or Systems or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or equivalent advanced technical degree.

  • 15 year experience in nuclear industry.

  • 10 year experience preparing system design requirements, specifications, documentation, and related detailed design artifacts using digital tools such as; drawings, databases, tabular lists covering functions, algorithms, set points, equipment and instrument characteristics and configurations, electrical and heat loads, physical equipment layout.

  • 10 year experience using industry standards applicable to nuclear plant I&C systems design and modification design change packages (DCPs) through requisition engineering or fulfillment and FAT to successful site installation test and COD:

  • IEC Standards 60xxx, 61xxx and 62xxx series, OR

  • IEEE Standards 828, 829, 830, 1008, 1012, 1028, 1042, and 1074.

  • 10 year experience with excellent PC as well as productivity software [e.g.; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio].

Eligibility Requirements

  • The preferred work location for this role is at the GEH Headquarters in Wilmington, NC; but highly qualified (US based) remote candidates will be considered.

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to U.S. export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of U.S. person status prior to employment.

Desired Characteristics

  • Masters in Engineering for Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Computer Science or Technology, Software or Systems or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, etc. or second advanced technical degree.

  • Professional Engineer – Control Systems by National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

  • PMI/PMP or MBA.

  • Senior Reactor Operator (SRO).

  • Patent Award Holder.

  • Experience in nuclear analog and digital instrumentation, control and monitoring with detailed knowledge in systems, hardware, software, theory of operation, mulation, s, detailed design, with be rfacing systems such as; control rod drive (CRD), rod block monitor (RBM), rod worth min instrument set point and calibration methodologies, testing and field services or plant start-ups – Preferably involving First Of A Kind (FOAK) projects.

  • Experience in nuclear regulatory affairs as well as design certification and licensing processes in accordance with either international [e.g.; Canadian, UK, Finland, Sweden, IAEA] or US NRC laws, rules, general design criteria (GDC), regulatory guidance (RG), staff requirement memorandum (SRM), interim staff guidance (ISG), branch technical positions (BTP), information notices (IN).

  • Experience with equipment qualification (EQ) [environmental, seismic, embedded digital] inspection, test, and analysis methodologies, plans, procedures, and reports to diverse nuclear industry regulations [e.g.; CSA, IAEA, NRC] and referenced standards [e.g.; ASME, CSA, IEC, IEEE].

  • Experience in application, deployment and support engineering of complex, high reliability, harsh environment, real time operating digital systems involving single point failure criterion, dual-triple-quad redundancy, signal acquisition, data processing, inter-networking, separation, human factors, safety hazards, reliability, simulation, cyber security requirements.

  • Experience using modern digital engineering collaboration and design tools:

  • Content creation [e.g.; Confluence/Atlassian, Sharepoint/Microsoft],

  • Requirements management [e.g.; DOORS-NextGen/IBM],

  • Diagram and drawing [e.g.; Visio/Microsoft, Autocad/Autodesk],

  • Design and analysis simulation [e.g.; Easy5/MSC, Simulink-MATLAB/MathWorks, Mathcad/PTC, 3KeyMaster/WSC],

  • Change, configuration, document and bill of material (BOM) management [e.g.; ENOVIA/Dassault-Systemes].

  • Clear thinker, detail oriented, insightful, quantitative, results oriented – Able to make reasoned, sound, and timely decisions.

  • Exceptional technical writing skills.

  • Strong verbal communication and facilitating skills for technical and business audiences.

  • Able and willing to take ownership and responsibility for scoping, planning, prioritizing, scheduling, budgeting, action tracking, monitoring, corrective actions, reporting, etc.

  • Self-starter with energy and positive “Can-Do” attitude.

  • Proven track record of producing quality deliverables for large and complex designs on specification, budget, and schedule in a fast passed environment.

  • Team player with cross- discipline and matrixed functional skills and experience.

  • Able to handle multiple concurrent assignments and priorities.

  • Adaptive with continuous learning and improvement “mindset” with an ability to identify, influence, and implement better ways to do an activity or process.

  • Working knowledge, skill, and experience using Agile or LEAN, define, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC), design for six sigma (DFSS), design for reliability (DFR), and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA).

The base pay range for this position is $128k-202k. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 11/13/2024.

The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
