Novant Health Life Safety Technician (NHRMC Only) in Wilmington, North Carolina

Overview

The Life Safety Technician performs duties in each hospital/medical center within the market to ensure both environment of care and life safety standards and regulations are being maintained within the physical environment. This would include but not limited to installing fire retardant material to maintain barrier integrity; constructing wall frames, installing drywall and finishing with tape and joint compound, sealing all penetrations with various fire stop materials, for both rated walls, conduit, etc, ensuring fire suppression lines are free of wires and other obstructions touching or attached to the pipes or supports, electrical junction boxes are covered and electrical connections are appropriately secured, rated doors secure properly, exit signs are illuminated, and other items are in compliance with life safety codes. The technician will document all findings and note if corrected on site, or if additional labor (work order) is required, documenting using a laptop and photographs and implementing ILSM. During mock surveys and/or other state and local inspections, the technician may accompany the inspector, providing support.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED, required.

  • Experience: Minimum two years experience in the construction trade, preferred. Minimum two years hospital experience performing plant operations and general maintenance, preferred.

  • Licensure/Certification: NFPA 101 and NFPA 99 training, preferred. Valid and appropriate driver’s license, required.

  • Additional Skills (required): Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing. Ability to successfully apply customer satisfaction standards. Knowledge of computerized maintenance management (work request) systems. Excellent written and oral communication skills, is proficient with Microsoft applications and recordkeeping, and possesses a working knowledge of National Fire Protection Agency Life Safety Code and hospital accreditation survey preparation. Experience in carpentry, drywall, and insulation knowledge. Experience in fire stopping methodology. The ability to read and interpret building plans, including Life Safety, Fire Alarm, Sprinkler, HVAC and Electrical. Must possess initiative and be able to work independently. Must be able to work effectively with changing priorities. Ability to interact with individuals of all cultures and levels of authority. Ability to use a personal computer, and hand held tablet device to communicate, receive and complete work orders. Ability to drive/travel to multiple locations/facilities as needed.

  • Additional Skills (preferred): Understanding of healthcare facility infection prevention requirements as they relate to maintenance activities. The ability to read and interpret Life Safety Drawings. Basic understanding of I-2 construction requirements. General understanding of Joint Commission Standards, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
