Distinguishing Features of Work\ Are you a hands-on problem solver with a knack for mechanical systems? The City of Wichita is looking for a dedicated Maintenance Mechanic to join the Sewer Treatment team. In this role, you\'ll play a vital part in ensuring the functionality and safety of critical sewer treatment facilities. Youll handle a variety of mechanical and building trade tasks, from maintaining and repairing essential systems like pumps, piping, and fluid distribution networks to troubleshooting equipment to keep operations running smoothly. While advanced mechanical skills are essential, the expertise required does not extend to journeyman level in any one trade. This independent, impactful role is ideal for those who thrive in a technically focused, high-stakes environment, working directly to support the communitys infrastructure.

Examples of Work Performed
- Inspects buildings, machinery and equipment to locate need for repair work.
- Lubricates machinery and equipment.
- Maintains, repairs, and rebuilds pumps and related fluid distribution equipment.
- Performs minor electrical repairs.
- Repairs various types of small stationary or portable mechanical equipment.
- May operate light equipment such as skid loaders, forklifts and mowing equipment.
- Supervises assigned lower-level maintenance employees.

Requirements of Work
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and materials used in mechanical and electromechanical fluid distribution systems
- Working knowledge of building construction and building equipment operation
- Knowledge of work hazards and ability to take necessary safety precautions
- Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders; work in equipment pits; and bend, twist, and reach as necessary to repair equipment
- Ability to tolerate exposure to chemicals and fluids commonly used in building and equipment maintenance and repair;; chemicals commonly found in processing water or sewage; airborne environmental nuisances associated with machine exhaust and open grounds; and heavy machinery noise (with the use of ear plugs)
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools that tighten, loosen, or cut
- Ability to operate a torch and other shop equipment for welding and other repairs to equipment
- Ability to accomplish minor fabrication with metal or lumber
- Ability to use a computer for Preventive Maintenance documentation and records
- Ability to wear required safety gear to perform mechanic duties
- Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
- Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver\'s license
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
\ Required Experience and Training
- 2 years experience in inspecting buildings, machinery, and equipment to locate needed repairs.
- Certification from a trade school in one of the following fields: Auto Mechanics, HVAC, Welding and Mechanical Equipment Maintenance.
- 6 months of experien e in maintaining inventory of routinely used maintenance and repair materials.
- A valid Kansas driver\'s license.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
\ Preferred Experience and Training
- 1 year experience in repairing water or wastewater pumps, motors, and working with industrial equipment such as compressors, piping systems, and other machinery within a wastewater treatment
