LIBRARY PROGRAM SUPERVISOR

General Statement of Duties

Performs supervisory and professional and paraprofessional librarian work participating in and overseeing in a program of the County Library.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class oversees a program within the County Library and supervises staff associated with providing services. Employees specialize in one programmatic area such as adult and reference, technical or childrens services, and assist the Director with departmental management. Work includes supervising staff and includes a variety of tasks such as: planning and oversight of programs; advising and assisting in activities and special events; assisting the public with specialized information needs; analyzing and evaluating collections and making decisions on new purchases and weeding the current collection; organizing program materials; compiling data and records; and representing the Library in the community.Work requires judgment and initiative as well as tact and diplomacy in dealing with the patrons and the general public. Work is performed independently under the supervision of the Library Director and is evaluated through conferences, reports, quality and quantity of services delivered, and daily observation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

Oversees services of a major division within the Library; supervises full-time and/or part-time staff including participating in hiring of staff, orientation and training, determining schedules, performance evaluation, and on-going work review and coaching; oversees scheduling of staff to assure coverage of the assigned desk.

Determines work priorities; compiles data, generates reports and maintains records on activities.

As needed, works at the circulation desk and Instructs patrons in how to use the library, interlibrary loan and computers to access needed information sources and books; takes requests and searches interlibrary loan system to locate books, periodicals, articles, etc.; requests loans and provides necessary information; responds to interlibrary loan requests received and sends out books, materials; provides readers advisory; locates materials in Library or through interlibrary loan; assists patrons with internet usage to answer questions.

Reviews, evaluates, and analyzes assigned portion of collections to ensure factors such as accuracy, currency, balance and diversity and patron interest are reflected in the collection; selects appropriate books for purchase through the use of review and other sources as well as knowledge of patron interest and demographics; maintains familiarity with patron usage trends; weeds collections.

Attends training; reads and keeps current professionally; keeps current on collections by reading and reviewing books and materials received; and maintains knowledge of books and materials and technical advances in the library field.

Childrens services

Plans and organizes children's programs and activities including Summer Reading program, preschool story time, after school care story time, workshops for pre-school day care center staff, and other related children's programming; assists children, parents, teachers and other students or adults in reader advisory and reference.

Orders materials for children and juveniles; assists other branches develop collections for children.

Adult Services

Provides technical reference services to patrons in person and by phone; uses a variety of materials and sources to answer questions; conducts research to provide patrons with requested information.

Maintains awareness of recourses available for reference including databases, NC Live and other available information; compiles bibliographies for frequently asked questions.

Oversees scheduling of staff o assure coverage of the circulation desk.

Maintains community information database on area organizations and services for the Countys citizens.

Provides specialized assistance and instruction on research and retrieval of genealogy and local history information, and on use of and addition to the Librarys collection on these areas.

Technical Services:

Oversees acquisition of materials for the library; directs receipt and processing of materials including accuracy of order and proper receipt of materials.

Directs and performs the cataloging and classification of all library materials; performs original cataloging; oversees the addition and removal of materials from catalogs.

Local History:

Assists patrons with information and materials on local history and genealogy; oversees collection development for specialized area.

May assist in library technology services in areas such as website development and updating.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of books, materials and resources in area of assignment.

Thorough knowledge of electronic information systems, including the Internet.

Considerable knowledge of the operational practices of a public library and practices of library science in area of assignment.

Skill in presentations and in program-related public contact.

Ability to analyze and evaluate assigned area of collections and make decisions on acquisitions and weeding of collections.

Ability to supervise the work of assigned staff, including training and performance evaluations.

Ability to plan and coordinate successful programs and services for assigned populations.

Ability to assess and assist patrons of all ages and demographic groups.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers, officials and the general public.

Ability to utilize a variety of resources to provide information to and acquire materials for patrons.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, and hearing.

Must be able to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, for extensive reading for visual inspection of books and materials at distances close to the eyes, and for use of measurement devices.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from college and some experience in library work at the para-professional level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. MLS preferred.

Special Requirement

Possession of a valid North Carolinas Drivers license may be required for some positions.
