Lead Surgical Technologist

Caregivers in Weston Hospital's Operating Room (OR) circulate a large variety of complex surgical cases in the 18-suite Operating Room, including but not limited to organ transplants, orthopedic, and neurosurgical cases. Surgical Technologists, sometimes called 'scrub techs', assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses and ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, prepare sterile dressing and clean instruments for terminal sterilization.

A caregiver in this position works 6:30AM - 5:30PM with on-call requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Monitor and direct the activities of assigned Surgical Technologists in the OR.

  • Perform duties of a Surgical Technologist as needed.

  • Provide patient care in the OR by performing in a scrub role.

  • Assist in the circulating role as needed.

  • Collaborate with SPD to maintain instruments and specialty trays.

  • Provide performance documentation.

  • Assume department leadership in the absence of the supervisor.

  • Review surgical schedules and service line shift reports daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures.

  • Seek ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain workflow and improve service.

  • Perform and oversee precepting.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist.

  • Completion of a surgical technology program accredited through the CAAHEP or ABHES OR completion of a military surgical technology program.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Internal caregivers: one year of experience in a Surgical Technologist role.

  • External future caregivers: two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role.
