Cardiovascular Technicians use various imaging tools to help physicians identify and diagnose issues with the heart and the surrounding blood vessels. This includes non-invasive procedures such as echocardiography (imaging the heart) and vascular ultrasound (imaging the blood vessels), as well as some invasive procedures such as cardiovascular catheterization, stent insertion, balloon angioplasty, and implanting pacemakers. Cardiovascular Technicians also explain various procedures to patients to help them relax, so those wishing to pursue this career must be willing to work with patients.

A caregiver in this position works 7:00AM - 5:30PM with on-call requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provide guidelines for RCVT/RCIS roles and functions in the Cath Lab.

  • Assist nursing and medical caregivers to provide care to patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.

  • Perform scrubbing and monitoring duties during procedures.

  • Perform pre-procedure preparation, post-procedure care and patient disposition in collaboration with nursing and medical staff.

  • Perform basic EKG interpretation, single and 12-lead ST segments analysis for ischemia/injury patterns and recognition of arrhythmias.

  • Recognize and interpret EKG changes related to all electrophysiology procedures such as mapping, ablating, and implanting of cardiac resynchronization devices.

  • Perform arterial and venous pressure monitoring, sampling and basic interpretation.

  • Perform three-dimensional mapping systems and the principles of cardiac resynchronization therapy.

  • Document procedures completely and accurately including medications and supplies.

  • Perform patient observation.

  • Assist team members in acute cardiac care, including resuscitation and related therapeutic effects.

  • Demonstrate aseptic technique throughout pre, intra, and post procedures.

  • Perform technical skills proficiently during procedure demonstrating working knowledge of equipment in use during the case.

  • Set up scrub procedures in both the Cath and EP lab.

  • Prepare all instruments/equipment for decontamination following universal precautions and take them to the sterilization department.

  • Assist in room cleaning after each case according to Cleveland Clinic Hospital's policy.

  • Restock procedure room when cases are completed for the day.

  • Always maintain patient, medical record, department and employee confidentiality.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Certificate from a cardiovascular technology program or school of radiology.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider card.

  • Cath lab experience.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Certified or Registered Cardiovascular Technologist (RCVT).

Physical Requirements:

  • Workload is heavy and requires constant lifting, moving of patients, equipment, instrument trays, and supplies.

  • Able to lift items up to 50 pounds without assistance and greater than 50 pounds with assistance.

  • Stooping, pushing and pulling required when moving patients or equipment into position for surgery.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
