WestRock Company Mechanical Engineering Intern in West Point, Virginia
Our Smurfit Westrock Early Careers Mechanical Intern/Co-op will gain a hands-on experience in one of Smurfit Westrock\u2019s manufacturing capacities. Throughout the assignments, there will be a heavy emphasis placed on safety, teamwork, and process improvement. By the end of the assignment, this experience will have positively contributed to your curriculum and career goals in preparation for life after college.
Internship Opportunities and Locations: We are currently recruiting for multiple Internship and Co-op positions to support our Mill Operations, Corrugated Packaging, Consumer Packaging, and R&D business units. For this role, the location would be for West Point, VA.
Major Job Responsibilities:
The Mechanical Intern will be repair, maintain, and install plant electrical, electronic and instrumentation equipment.
Create electrical maintenance requests for repairs based on findings with equipment in the mill.
Perform maintenance tasks for equipment within the mill.
Work as a team with other maintenance team members.
Function at high levels of quality and efficiency while maintaining the highest standard of safety.
Employee must follow standard work procedures and safe work practices/procedures.
Develop and apply skills to help increase efficiency, reliability, and productivity within WestRock\u2019s manufacturing, converting, or support groups.
Analyze data sets to identify key insights and provide value-based solutions
Identify root cause problems through troubleshooting issues to identify areas of opportunities
Report project discovery findings to managers, teams, and senior leadership
Serve as safety champion by understanding and enforcing department, plant or mill safety policies
Manage day-to-day activities of assigned roles, complete project tasks, and implement new processes

Communicate cross-functionally about technical and project findings
Collaborate closely with assigned team members to complete project tasks

Technical Skills:

Work Environment:
Be comfortable working in an industrial / manufacturing work setting where applicable
Be able to Maintain strict adherence to safety rules and regulations
Experience:
· Preferred: Minimum course experience as recommended per position in related field
· Experience dealing with basic industrial safety topics such as lockout, fall protection, confined space entry, personal protective equipment, and guarding.
Education:Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited technical college/university program. Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Engineering Design, Instrumentation and Control Automation
