U.S. Military Academy Instructor/ Assistant Professor in West Point, New York
Summary About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities. Responsibilities Serves as a board-certified Athletic Trainer from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification in the Department of Physical Education (DPE) in support of the DPE Sports Medicine Team. Serve as an Instructor in the DPE, primarily teaching Fundamentals of Personal Fitness and one of four core courses such as boxing, combative, military movement (gymnastics), and/or survival swimming and Lifetime Physical Activities. As an instructor you will teach how to assess, develop, and maintain individual health and fitness as defined by the Army's Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) system. Communicate how to optimize performance through tailored physical training, effective nutritional fueling, recovery through sound sleep habits, and the development of performance-based psychological skills. Teach and demonstrate a wide range of skills and sports based on current trends, resources, instructor expertise, and cadet needs. Examples include, but are not limited to: Golf, Basketball, Skiing/Snowboarding, Scuba, Soccer, Tennis, etc. Provide physical readiness training instruction during Cadet Summer Training. Administer a variety of physical fitness tests to cadets. Provide acute injury evaluation (non-emergent and emergent), first aid, pre-participation medical screening for high-risk sports, emergency action plan education, CPR/AED instruction, and fitness testing medical excusal validation. Manage equipment budget, orders and maintains the athletic training room supplies. Serves as a medical liaison with physicians, hospital staff, and facilities personnel. Maintain records of injuries and provide recommendations concerning methods of prevention. Maintain the treatment area with restocking and cleaning. This is a full-time Term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 3 years. Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic Accomplishment (Master's preferred) In Physical Education or related field. 2) Demonstrated experience in athletic training at the collegiate level. 3) The ability to instruct Health, Fitness, and/or Kinesiology courses at the collegiate level. 4) Demonstrated ability to teach a variety of Sports and/or Activity courses at the collegiate level. Payment of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs is not authorized, based on a determination that a PCS move is not in the Government interest. This position is not eligible for regular, and recurring telework. This position is eligible for situational telework only, including emergency and OPM prescribed "unscheduled telework". Situational telework is approved on a case-by-case basis, where the hours worked were not part of a previously approved, ongoing, and regular telework schedule.
