About the Indiana Veterans' Home:

The Indiana Veterans' Home is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Originally created to care for veterans of the Civil War, the Indiana Veterans’ Home welcomed its first resident in 1896. Located on 250+ acres in West Lafayette, IVH is a full-service care facility offering a complete array of services for residents.

The mission of the Indiana Veterans' Home is to honor Indiana's veterans and their spouses by providing the highest level of care in a therapeutic home-like environment, enhancing health and yielding optimal quality of life. To do this and meet the unique needs of these heroes and their families, we deliver compassionate and comprehensive skilled care while integrating arts and cultural programming and preserving the rich history of the Home.

Role Overview:

Supervises and/or coordinates the work of other nurses and/or sub-professional health care aides. Performs professional nursing care under the direction of a registered nurse or licensed physician. Incumbent works as a Unit Manager in the Nursing Department of the Indiana Veterans' Home. Performs all aspect of supervisory duties within a specialized area or on a nursing care unit, with minimal supervision. Reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing for the unit. The ideal candidate should have previous supervisory and/or unit manager experience as well as great leadership and organizational skills.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $56,316.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Participates in care planning of all aspects of residents on the assigned units.

  • Communicates changes in conditions to families and physicians.

  • Follows recommended safety and infection control standards.

  • Assists with the orientation of new employees.

  • Interviews and hires staff.

  • Writes and reviews policies for specific areas.

  • Serves on and man chair committee meetings in assigned areas.

  • Completes subordinate appraisals.

  • Conducts periodic meetings with staff.

  • Arranges transportation for residents.

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates specialized programs within a specific area of responsibility.

  • Coordinates work of subordinates.

  • Collects and maintains data relative to specific areas of responsibility.

  • Assures compliance with regulatory issues within a specific area of responsibility.

  • Teaches in-services to all staff and maintains required documentation.

  • Responds to all codes and safety alerts.

What You'll Need for Success:

The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either

  • a High School Diploma, or

  • at least 1+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.

Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

  • Current Indiana LPN license.

  • Practical knowledge of applicable state and federal laws.

  • Practical knowledge of state personnel practices.

  • Ability to teach and demonstrate procedures to staff.

  • Ability to supervise staff.

  • Ability to communicate with residents, subordinates, other facility employees, visitors, and outside facility employees.

  • Ability to react to emergencies and direct staff as needed.

  • Ability to accurately assess residents and document and communicate results.

  • Ability to write, implement and evaluate programs to assure compliance with applicable rules/laws.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
