Job Summary :
Operate a river towboat engaged in the transportation of coal or other commodities on the inland river system. Operate the boat during the after watch shift, under the direction of the Captain. Responsibility includes supervision of the crew, maintaining the boat in a safe and seaworthy condition, navigation of the boat and administration of Company policies and procedures.
Essential Job Functions & Tasks :
Navigate the towboat on the after watch consistent with safe operating practices, for the size of the tow, river conditions, river traffic, weather, and when necessary seek assistance from the Captain.
Observe the Rules of the Road and all applicable regulations in navigating the boat.
Adhere to all RCP/Company policies and procedures.
Must follow the company's watch change policies, including Sub Chapter M requirements.
Responsible to complete, submit and retain all required documentation.
Assume responsibility for operation of the towboat on the after watch as directed by the Captain.
Directly supervise the mate and all members of the crew on the after watch.
Operate the boat in a safe and efficient manner.
Ensure that the boat is maintained in a seaworthy condition through consultation with the Captain.
Assist in inspecting the towboat and the tow as needed. Recommend corrective action to the Captain when necessary.
Record towboat inspections, inspection results and corrective action in the ship's log, as directed.
Conduct a safety meeting for all crew members weekly, hold additional meetings when needed, Submit a record of each safety meeting to the Training Department.
Assist in conducting regularly scheduled fire and emergency drills to ensure that all crew members are familiar with the alarms and that the alarms are working properly.
Assist in ensuring that all firefighting and safety equipment is maintained in proper working order.
Receive operational instructions from the dispatchers, coordinate scheduled pick-ups and deliveries with the Pilot, Mate and Second Mate, and direct tow construction to maximize operating efficiency.
Initiate job safety briefings before any job task is performed.
Ensure that the deck crew follow proper decking procedures and provide instruction and guidance where needed. Encourage safe work practices.
Ensure that all faulty rigging is tagged and removed from the tow and secured on the towing vessel for proper disposal at designated facilities.
Monitor rigging exchange with other companies to ensure that rigging received is serviceable and equal in quantity to rigging traded and remove from use and store defective rigging for return to storage.
Follow proper procedures for use of the radios.
Assist the Captain in seeing that the vessel operates within the allotted budget. Receive orders for stores and supplies from the crew and submit them to the Captain.
In cases of injury to an employee, assist in conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Submit completed accident investigation report to the Captain.
Notify the Captain immediately following any serious illness, accidents resulting in injury to the crew, or damage to the vessel/tow.
Complete performance evaluations yearly, as well as when needed.
Advise Captain of overtime worked by crew members on the after watch.
Carry out, within the assigned area of responsibility, the Company's program of Equal Employment Opportunity, including its Affirmative Action obligations.

Basic Qualifications :
Educational Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and/or experience, along with holding a current valid driver's license. Proper Merchant Mariner credential.
Experience Requirements: Marine industry experience preferred. Must have an excellent understanding of the marine business with 8-10 years industry experience, prefer 5 years of that being in the Pilot House. Appropriate licensing is required. Expected to exercise considerable initiative in all areas of work to ensure safe and efficient operations. Advanced problem solving skills a must. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Must possess the ability to motivate and lead co-workers.

Salary: Currently $336.72/day
