Job Description

Chief Engineer - Electronics and On the Bike

As one of the Chief Engineers at Trek, you’ll make sure our engineering output is safe, complete, and smart.

This is a position of technical leadership rather than people management, sometimes known as Staff Engineer in other companies. While you won’t be engineering specific physical products, you’ll touch all Trek’s products through ownership of tools, processes, and approvals.

You will

  • Be part of Trek’s small team of Chief Engineers and primarily work with the Electronics and On the Bike accessories engineering teams.

  • Guide engineers through the product development process at scales both small (e.g. mentoring, design reviews) and large (e.g. training, engineering standards).

  • Simplify our engineering processes through standards, tools, re-use, and just writing things down.

  • Ensure Trek’s engineering, quality, compliance, and legal requirements are covered in our engineering specifications. Ensure projects have clear delineation of engineering authority between Trek and vendors. Sign off on test plans, DFMEAs, and ECOs within your domain of expertise. Own the process, standards, and templates for the same.

  • Work with our colleagues in Product Lifecycle Management to build tools to efficiently deliver excellent data to Engineering’s customers. Responsibly apply great superuser power in many of our systems.

  • Continuously improve our product development process in collaboration with the engineering management team.

What you need to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar with 10+ years of experience in a product development role. Some experience with mechanical design.

  • A bias toward thinking big-picture. Spot and solve related problems at the same time rather than one at a time.

  • Execution. Take messy, ambiguous problems and turn them into a solution and direction. Skills to present ideas and convince others using facts, data, and charm.

  • A drive to level up both yourself and others. Make us all smarter.

  • Ability to work independently and in teams to identify, fix, and follow through on opportunities for innovation and improvement.

  • A willingness to pull the e-brake when something needs to stop and be done correctly. The judgement to know when something is not a show-stopper.

  • Skills developing and maintaining strong working relationships with an international team and global suppliers. A history of cross-departmental collaboration with colleagues in Quality, Compliance, and Product Lifecycle Management.

  • Willingness to travel when required. Consumption of spicy food negotiable.

  • Ability to take on multiple projects with the appropriate level of delegation and time management.

Bonus points for:

  • Deep user experience with product lifecycle management tools.

  • Experience assembling and maintaining bikes and ebikes.
