Job Overview

Georgetown’s Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging (CFMI) (https://cfmi.georgetown.edu/) is actively developing a research program utilizing a number of imaging techniques.

The Research Technician works with investigators on extending current fMRI acquisition and analysis techniques as well as carrying out research. Their role has two principal components: running the 3.0T MRI scanner and carrying out the research studies underway in the lab.

The success of the CFMI completely depends on the Research Technician’s successful operation of this complicated MRI scanner, working with researchers from other labs, assisting them when they encounter problems, and making sure the wide-range of participants being scanned feel comfortable.

Running the MRI Scanner

  • After training, runs the 3.0T MRI scanner

  • Ensures the safety of those being scanned

  • Works with users in terms of scheduling scan sessions

  • Assists in the execution of their neuroimaging experiments

  • Manages data transfer

  • Provide help and support - such as technological troubleshooting

  • Perform analysis and quality control of data collected for various projects

Research Support

  • Collect MRI, cognitive-behavioral, and biological specimen data

  • Administer data organization, processing, analysis

  • Assist with data interpretation including manuscript preparation

  • Use their strong technical skills to implement quality control procedures, setup a real-time fMRI analysis system, and integrate a camera detected head movement into participant training

Work Interactions

Both components of the role of the Research Technician include working with sensitivity to all populations – for example, patients of all ages whose health is impacted by developmental issues (e.g., autism), Alzheimer’s disease, and strokes.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • B.A. or equivalent required – preference for relevant fields such as psychology, neuroscience, computer science, or biomedical engineering

  • Ability to operate this complicated MRI scanner, working with researchers from other labs, assisting them when they encounter problems, and making sure the wide-range of participants being scanned feel comfortable. Thus, a combination of highly technical and inter-personal skills is required

  • One year of experience working in a research lab is preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$17.41 - $26.03

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
