National Gallery of Art Mason Supervisor in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary The primary purpose of the job is to supervise employees of the Mason Shop in the maintenance and repair of marble, stonework, roofing, glass, bronze doors, and other masonry of all interior and exterior areas of the campus. Responsibilities The incumbent will: The incumbent supervises and directs a full range of Mason Shop operations including inspection and oversight of contractors throughout the National Gallery of Art's indoor and outdoor areas utilizing traditional stone masonry trade practices as well as current masonry technology. Oversees all in-house and contractor masonry functions on stone, marble, brick, block, and related-composition surfaces. The incumbent oversees and or individually performs the following masonry work: Pointing and grouting joints. Patching and grinding, cleaning and polishing, cutting, maintenance and repair of all assigned stone and marble areas on high and low surfaces and appurtenant areas of the buildings. Refinishing, setting and drilling a variety of stone and brick, granite, limestone, clay tile and marble. Workers performing mixing, pouring, shaping, smoothing and finishing plaster and concrete surfaces. Decorative stone and brickwork to create various designs and patterns Assigned projects relating to exhibitions often require a high degree of skill and ability to work to close specifications and precise tolerances. The incumbent considers the size, shape, and weight of the object and plans, selects, and installs the appropriate standard and complex rigging gear; sets up, and operates ropes, straps, cables, chains, slings, and other weight­ handling gear to lift, move, and position fragile and heavy pieces of art including antiquities and sculpture of marble, metal, stone, and composite materials. Skill and ability in overseeing the use of all of the various kinds of tools and equipment required of the masonry trade. The incumbent oversees and assists others in moving and placing large sculpture and other art pieces of the National Gallery. Art includes large, very heavy, cumbersome, and extremely fragile marble, stone, metal, sculpture, pedestals, porcelain, furniture, and related artifacts. Items may be awkward, oversized, and weigh several hundred pounds. The incumbent climbs stairs and ladders and walks and stands on his feet for long periods of time on marble or related surfaces. Works from standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping, tiring, awkward, or uncomfortable positions. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of falls when working from high areas.
