We are seeking an English Language Coordinator and Instructor. The position will teach and oversee English language curriculum and instruction at the advanced level for the non-native graduate student population and manage the Writing Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. English language courses have over 100 students per semester in levels ranging from Advanced-Mid through Superior (ACTFL scale). In addition, the individual in this position will administer placement tests for incoming non-native English-speaking students and language proficiency exams to ensure students have met their degree requirements for graduation. This position is directly responsible for the academic and administrative organization of English language training and support.

The Language Studies Program (LSP) contributes to the school's mission of enabling its students to better understand the world and improve it through the instruction of language and culture in the context of international relations. The Washington, DC campus currently offers instruction in 10 languages including English. As part of the school's graduation requirements, MAIR students need to pass a language proficiency exam in one of the languages taught at SAIS--including English. The LSP is responsible for the language proficiency assessment of these students. To fulfill its mission, the LSP works in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, Admissions and Student Affairs.

This is a 10-month position (August 15 through June 15) for an initial term of one year and can be renewed and/or extended.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching (40%)

  • Teach two in-person sections of advanced-level courses of English in both fall and spring, with a specific emphasis on the development of written and oral skills for academic purposes through content-based instruction in topics of International Relations.

  • Teach the equivalent of two sections of Pre-Term English in summer (may be in-person, online and virtual).

  • Hold office hours for each course.

Curriculum and Assessment (25%)

  • Develop the curriculum and instructional materials for English language training in topics relevant to the study of International Relations.

  • Prepare syllabi in collaboration with part-time English instructors.

  • Prepare, design, and administer the English diagnostic and proficiency exams.

Program Management (10%)

  • Run the day-to-day operations of English language program.

  • Serve as point of contact for all incoming, first year, and graduating students for English requirements.

  • Provide English language academic advising to students.

  • Track student progress toward meeting English language requirements--including proficiency.

  • Oversee English language testing for newly admitted students to determine the need for additional English language training.

Language Faculty Supervision (10%)

  • Supervise and guide the adjunct English language faculty.

  • Recruit and recommend hiring, renewals and cancellations of English part-time and adjunct faculty to the Director of the Language Program.

  • Deliver training support to the English language faculty, as needed.

Writing Center Management (15%)

  • In conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, oversee the operation and services of the SAIS Writing Center.

  • Hire, train, and supervise writing tutors.

  • Develop writing resources and offer workshops for targeted student populations.

  • Work with school faculty and administration to address student writing needs.

  • Hold individual consultations with students in need of writing assistance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree required; Doctoral Degree preferred. At least four years of instructional experience in a higher education setting.

  • Experience delivering blended and online language instruction.

  • Higher education or relevant teaching and management experience.
