Job Overview

The Director of Data Governance is a leadership position that leads the Data Governance team, manages the University Data Governance Center, and coordinates Georgetown’s Data Governance Advisory Committee stewardship activities. This position leads the development and implementation of data governance strategies, policies, and compliance initiatives to ensure the organization’s data assets are managed with the highest standards of quality, security, and compliance.

Work Interactions

The Director of Data Governance reports to the AVP for Data Strategy and will lead a team of service management and technical resources. This position will work closely with other data strategy areas including Data Analysis, Data Engineering, and Business Intelligence as well as other key institutional partners such as the Office of Assessment and Decision Support, Office of General Council, and the University Information Security Office. The Director of Data Governance will also server on or coordinate key institutional committees such as the Data Governance Advisory Committee. This role will provide the university community a central location for understanding and describing university data resources and will also help the community to request, prioritize, and systematize new data products. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

Data Governance Program Administration and Oversight

  • Manage the development, implementation, and execution of Georgetown’s Data Governance program, including special projects and other initiatives designed to achieve the overall mission, goals, and objectives of the program.

  • Oversee and administer all facets of the day-to-day operations of the Data Governance Center and activities related to the program.

  • Create, produce, and deliver a range of promotional, educational, and informational presentations, and/or resource materials related to program activities and initiatives.

  • Create operating goals and objectives for the program; identify opportunities to enhance program operations in order to achieve efficiencies and effectiveness.

  • Serve as a liaison with internal and external constituencies on matters relating to data governance; represent the University with respect to program activities on a local, regional, and/or national basis.

  • Provide technical guidance, consultation, subject matter expertise, and related support to university constituents; provide day-to-day problem solving on program-related needs and issues.

Data Service Management

  • Serve as a liaison with internal and external constituencies on matters relating to requesting, prioritizing, tracking, and closing new requests for data products (ex. Certified dashboards, data sets, etc…).

  • Monitor, triage, track and coordinate resolution of issues and customer tickets.

  • Oversees and/or coordinate the collection and analysis of service management activity data.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field. Master's degree preferred

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in data governance, with expertise in the Collibra data governance tool

  • Strong understanding of data governance, data quality, and master data management principles, practices, and frameworks

  • Proven track record of implementing successful data governance initiatives

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

  • Experience working at a research university or academic medical center with deep knowledge of regulatory requirements in these environments

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and collaborative skills, and the ability to communicate governance, security, and risk related concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences

  • Exhibit excellent analytical skills, the ability to manage multiple projects under strict timelines as well as the ability to work well in a demanding, dynamic environment and meet overall objectives

  • Experience partnering with Human Resources, Legal, Risk Management, and other non-IT functions on processes and issues that relate to protection of critical information assets

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$103,723.00 - $202,778.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
