Requirements

Georgetown Law’s Center for Innovations in Community Safety (CICS) seeks a Director of Alternative Response Initiatives to lead its work supporting the growing movement of alternative first response organizations. CICS uses individual interventions and systems-level change to transform and end overreliance on policing and to mitigate the devastating impacts of racial and ethnic discrimination and economic inequality in the criminal legal system. Alternative responder programs are designed to provide more effective responses to the majority of 911 calls each year that do not require a response from fire, medical, or law enforcement. CICS has been one of the nation’s leading voices providing policy, research, and convening support to these programs (https://www.law.georgetown.edu/cics/wp-content/uploads/sites/43/2024/05/CICS_Alternative_Response_23_WEB-1.pdf) . The Director of Alternative Response Initiatives will be primarily responsible for leading all aspects of CICS’s program development in its alternative first response portfolio, including policy development, technical assistance, and advocacy, as well as assisting with the development of relevant research projects.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lead ongoing strategic development of CICS alternative first response portfolio, including conceiving of and launching new programmatic efforts, building and maintaining relationships with key organizational partners, and representing CICS in the media and at convenings

  • Raise money to support the development of the portfolio, including by identifying, and securing opportunities to provide technical assistance to cities, counties, states, and alternative response organizations

  • Lead the execution of CICS’s technical assistance work in alternative response

  • Lead planning of convenings, symposia, and webinars designed to build the knowledge base of practitioners and advocates

  • Build and implement a comprehensive policy agenda that promotes alternative response at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels

  • Work closely with the Director of Research and Evaluation on CICS’s academic publication and evaluation efforts related to alternative response

Work Interactions

This position reports to the Executive Director of CICS. The Director of Alternative Response Initiatives will work closely with CICS’s Faculty Directors and the Director of Research and Evaluation, and will supervise other members of the team assigned to work on alternative response, including at least one Senior Program Associate.

Work interactions will also include close coordination and collaboration with the University’s offices of Financial Affairs, Human Resources, Development, Communications, IST, Events, General Counsel, and the office of Centers & Institutes. This position will also work with outside partners to build and develop CICS’s alternative response portfolio.

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates should have 10+ years of post-undergraduate relevant experience (including academic and/or lived experience with the criminal legal system or behavioral health system) with at least 4 years of experience in alternative response programming and 4 years of experience as a direct supervisor of full-time staff.

Candidates should also have:

  • exceptional management instincts and the ability to lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team

  • ability to communicate effectively and with cultural competency with a range of audiences, including the public, researchers, funders, media, and policymakers
