Job Overview

The Custodian has duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe, sanitized, and pleasant physical environment

  • Performs other duties assigned include but not limited to furniture moving, office cleaning, class room cleaning, restroom cleaning, exterior entrances cleaning, providing emergency support, supporting special event set up and break down, and cleaning all public spaces

  • Performs duties that involve using tools, equipment, and supplies of the trade

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Custodian reports directly to the Manager of Custodial Services, and - as assigned by the Manager or Director / Assistant Director of Facilities Management - may report to another manager or staff member. As well, they interact with all levels of faculty, staff and students - as well as the general public in performance of duties.

Their primary purpose is to provide building support services that ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the University community. They are expected to behave in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, be flexible with respect to scheduling, and work as a part of a team.

This position has been designated as On-Campus. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Ability to perform at all levels of physical work including lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and scrubbing, requiring a strong back and endurance for physical labor

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • Ability to observe all safety rules and regulations that meet state, federal, and local governing jurisdictions

  • As assigned, ability to drive University vehicles when necessary

  • Possession of a driver’s license in Virginia, Maryland, or District of Columbia and qualified to conform with the University Driving Policy

  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English in order to read and understand product label instructions, policies and procedures, and to effectively discuss custodial matters with supervisors and others

  • Ability to sit, walk and stand while working, and to use arms and hands to lift and carry up to fifty pounds and custodial equipment

  • Good attitude and customer service orientation

  • High School diploma or equivalency preferred

The Custodian is designated as an Emergency employee, with the availability and willingness to work during emergency situations such as staffing shortages, inclement weather (including snow removal), and water damage clean up.
