Overview

The U.S. Global Change Research Program’s (USGCRP) National Coordination Office (NCO) seeks to hire an early career scientist with scientific or practice expertise related to climate adaptation. Primary responsibilities would include providing science and coordination support to USGCRP’s interagency groups for climate adaptation, climate observations, climate services, and for coordinating scientific assessments.

The USGCRP coordinates and integrates global change research and supporting activities conducted by 15 Federal Agencies and Departments. It is overseen by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) of the Executive Office of the President, and by representatives from the 15 agencies. The day-to-day activities and operations of the USGCRP are facilitated by the USGCRP NCO, which is responsible for promoting interagency coordination and integration of Federal climate and global change research programs and facilitating international cooperation.

Key Responsibilities

Coordination and support of interagency groups (IG) and activities for the integration of research and services related to climate adaptation and resilience, as well as climate observations and indicators. Tasks include:

  • Working with Federal IG co-chairs and USGRCP colleagues to conceptualize, plan, and execute working group meetings, including scheduling, materials development and distribution, and follow-up.

  • Providing logistic, technical, and communication support for any activities (e.g., webinars, workshops, publication development) that the groups may undertake.

  • Providing procedural guidance and support to author teams on reports including the National Climate Assessment, and supporting the National Climate Assessment through other ad hoc projects

  • Contributing to and coordinating IG input to USGCRP mandated reports, including Our Changing Planet and Strategic Plan.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 1 year of experience in scientific research and/or program coordination. Degree and/or work experience required related to climate and global change adaptation (e.g., research, implementation, data analysis, etc.). “OR” Master’s degree related to climate and global change adaptation (e.g., research, implementation, data analysis, etc.).

  • US Citizenship or US Permanent Resident (sponsorship for this role is not available including OPT).

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2-5 years of experience in scientific research and/or program coordination. Work experience required related to climate and global change adaptation (e.g., research, implementation, data analysis, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of fundamental adaptation concepts relevant to climate and global change required; experience in translating research for action and working on interdisciplinary teams is preferred.

  • Ability to understand and utilize scientific and technical concepts in support of program coordination.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills for meeting and project planning and execution.

  • Experience working in a team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Familiarity with climate model projections and downscaling research and concepts.

  • Experience working as part of a large institution and handling organizational bureaucracy.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:

$52,488.00 - $89,230.00
