The Business Manager, for the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) on the Medical Center Campus for Georgetown University assists the Division Director in managing the financial, human resource and office management processes to achieve departmental and University goals and objectives. They are responsible for maintaining the internal departmental accounting and chargeback system, which serves as a shared resource for all of Georgetown University biomedical research. Additionally, the business manager ensures adherence to University policies and procedures as well as federal compliance with NIH “Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual” for Animal Resource Facilities.
The position is also responsible for all accounts payable and receivable, working and negotiating with external vendors as well as processing revenue generating and service contracts. Furthermore, the business manager serves as the department’s Human Resource Contact to provide information and guidance to the Director and departmental employees on employee related matters as well as the preparation and processing of hiring forms and administration for recruitment, employment, waivers and terminations. Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintain the departmental cost accounting system.
Perform Cost Analysis and financial reporting on a quarterly basis.
Monitor and process all contract purchases and services provided on service contracts to assure that charges reconcile with services provided.
Analyze annual departmental expenditure, income and salary data and animal populations.
Supervise and mentor office personnel including performance evaluations, merit increases, and disciplinary actions.
Customize and maintain the software system by working directly with the company, DCM office staff, and IACUC Office.
Work Interactions
The Business Manager is a critical function within the Division of Comparative Medicine that works with the Veterinarian and Husbandry teams in meeting the animal research needs of the University. This position reports to the Division Director. Georgetown University Medical Center and Main Campus focuses on research and discovery and the Business Manager position supports that mission in collaborating with the finance and human resources offices to ensure fiscal prudence and compliant operations, in addition to direct communication with Principal Investigators and research lab personnel. This position also interacts directly with external staff members and interdepartmental staff members such as EH&S, Facilities, UIS, vendors, AAALAC, NCAB, USDA and IACUC site visitors/inspectors. Additionally, the business manager has direct supervisory responsibility for the Administrative Specialist and Accountant departmental positions.
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in business, accounting or a related field
A minimum of 5 years’ related experience is required (or equivalent combination of education and work experience)
Candidate should have superb organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and have well developed interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team-oriented approach
Demonstrated computer and database management skills, particularly Excel spreadsheets
Must be able to work independently with previous supervisory experience
Experience in a laboratory animal facility or academic research-oriented department preferred
Certified Manager – Animal Resources (CMAR) through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, MBA, or another post-baccalaureate financial training/certification strongly preferred

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$47,586.00 - $87,558.13
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
