Food Safety Technician

The Food Safety Technician is responsible for assisting with facility compliance to both internal standards and federal and state regulatory requirements. The incumbent will monitor, enforce, and maintain regulatory and the company’s food safety program standards to assure policies and procedures are followed.

  • HACCP & Food Safety Pre-requisite Programs - Supports plant HACCP and pre-requisite programs by reviewing, documenting compliance, non-conformances and provide training for the plant. Understands and keeps current with company and regulatory standards. Leads assigned standards and reports metrics and uses analytics for metric-based decisions. Plan and, as necessary, leads plant activities to meet or exceed regulatory, corporate, AIB and GFSI scheme requirements.

  • Documents & Records - Maintain required documents for Internal and External Audits and Requirements. Assist in the notification, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventative measures for Food Safety non-conformances and all-encompassing documentation, including but not limited to product release and MSS. Prepare, review, and update Food Safety Standard Operating Procedures and related forms to comply with regulatory and Company standards.

  • Budgets - Manages multiple budgets to ensure spending is maintained within budget; participates in Budget Development. Develops inventory order points for frequently used consumables

  • Third Party Management – Oversees and is a liaison for third party sanitation crews. Fully engaged in sanitation activities during shutdowns and maintains, operates and conducts preventative maintenance of applicable sanitation equipment/area. This includes all requirements related to compliance with confined space entry and other Minimum Safe Behavior processes. Investigates new cleaning methods and technology.

  • Inspection & Audits - Audit Internal processes against the Food Safety Standards to identify gaps and implement improvements to plant systems and write or modify procedures to support compliance. Audit the facility to ensure HACCP Standards are met. Monitor and look for abnormalities in the Food Safety Program, continuously look for ways to improve these processes and programs.

  • Vendor Management – Oversee assigned vendors including but not limited Pest Control, Chemical, and Cleaning Vendors to maintain relationships and ensure compliance with Company and regulatory standards.

  • Training - Maintain, update and provide food safety training to shift technicians and new employees, this includes but is not limited to GMP, HACCP, Food Defense, Auditing, Sanitation and any other training assigned Maintains personal training compliance and seeks advanced knowledge in food safety related subject matter.

  • Quality - Perform all Daily Quality & Food Safety checks to ensure product compliance to Hill's Standard, this includes but is not limited to Bulk Sampling & Testing Process, Dry mix Variances & Production Records, Processing Checks & Production Records, Packaging Checks & Production Records, Product Review, Holds and any other tasks assigned.Understand and comply with Hill’s policies, safety standards, good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety. Identify and report Food Safety issues to management.

  • Communication - Communicate quality standards, results, and issues to plant. Work with Quality Team Leader and Operations to ensure communication to across the facility.

Education/ Experience Requirements

Basic qualifications include:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 3+ years of Manufacturing Experience

  • Basic understanding of Microbiology and Aseptic Technique

  • Basic understanding of chemistry and sanitation procedures including chemical titrations

  • Computer application experience in SAP, OPERA, with intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills.

  • HERO’s member (if currently not one needs to be willing to become one within 3 months)

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in related field (Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Food Science)

  • Knowledge of Quality & Food Safety Standards

  • Willingness to obtain HACCP certification and SQF Practitioner certification

Physical Requirements

  • Knowledge of and compliance with Safety, GMP’s and environmental procedures and regulations

  • Ability to be flexible regarding work schedules and shift rotations (including nights, weekends and holidays)

  • Ability to work in a standard manufacturing environment…including:

  • Ability to work in an environment that has a wide range of temperature variation and humidity

  • Lift varied capacities over the following time periods:

  • 50 pounds, from floor to 36”, 15 times per hour for 4 hours

  • 50 pounds, from knees to 36”, 15 times per hour for 4 hours

  • 50 pounds, from waist to 36”, 15 times per hour for 4 hours

  • 50 pounds, overhead to 36”, 15 times per hour for 4 hours

  • Push or pull an 800-pound tote on wheels across a cement surface 8 to 24 times for 8 hours, occasionally

  • Work with hands overhead occasionally, up to 25 times for 8 hours

  • Bend at waist 90 degrees and flex at knees 120 degrees 100 to 500 times for 8 hours

  • Climb steps and/or ladders 30 times per 8 hours, 45 steps per trip

  • Walk unlimited distances every workday

  • Wear dust masks and hearing protection

  • Perceive visual and audible alarms and telephones while wearing hearing protection

  • Receive and transmit radio communication

  • Perform tasks with vision corrected to a minimum of 20/40, with full peripheral vision for forklift driving

  • Ability to perform tasks in an environment that contains significant levels of dust

  • Able to climb to the highest levels in the plant including silos, etc. as often as necessary

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time in front of a computer

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range $54 400,00 - $68 000,00 USD

Pay is based on multiple non-discriminatory, individualized factors including but not limited to experience, job-related knowledge and education, skills and office/market location. In addition to base salary, salaried employees are eligible for annual discretionary bonuses, profit-sharing and, for Executive-level (salary grade 16 and above) roles only, long-term incentives in the form of Restricted Stock Units and/or Stock Options.

Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable benefits plans then in effect, all salaried employees are also eligible for a competitive benefits package which includes:

  • Paid Sick Leave: Based on location and consistent with applicable state and local law, employees receive a minimum of 40 hours of paid sick leave on January 1st of each year

  • Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees may take up to eight weeks of paid parental leave and 12 weeks of unpaid leave (varies for employees with fewer than 12 months of service and is subject to hours worked requirements)
