Milton G. Waldbaum and Dan Gardner founded our egg-processing business in 1950 here in Wakefield. Our location raises chickens and produces tankers of liquid egg to be consumed by our processing facilities. Responsibilities JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the work and activities of the farm lab which deals with the monitoring of flocks and raw products for bacterial and viral agents, monitoring of vaccination efficacy, and biological science services to all Michael Foods Farms. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Adhere to safe work practices, follow GMP’s, maintain sanitary conditions and ensure that product quality is maintained. Report to management any conditions or practices that may adversely affect food safety, food quality or personnel safety. Adhere to all safety and biosecurity polices and procedures. Direct all aspects of the farm lab including ordering, budgeting, maintaining inventory of designated supplies, and provide additional help as needed. Obtain and maintain necessary certifications. Maintain and monitor an established salmonella-monitoring program. Establish new testing procedures as needed to monitor developing field problems. Maintain established serological monitoring such as ELISA and AGID. Maintain testing records, which may include the use of Excel. Coordinate with farm processing the testing of raw product and environmental samples using SPC, coliform counts, and other testing modalities as agreed upon. Assist in studies and help give direction to research projects and problem solving projects as established by farm managers and/or project managers. Schedule and monitor the collection of field samples such as culturing of houses, and collection of blood samples. Coordinate with other disease labs and monitor tests and testing procedures to coordinate with our lab tests. Guide direct reports in all lab functions. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications JOB QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 4-year degree from a biological science program. (Preferred) Minimum 2+ years experience in a laboratory with bacteriological experiences in media preparation and bacterial identification, serological testing, and general laboratory management Experience in an animal disease lab is not essential although an agricultural background would be helpful. Good communications and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisors and other technical people are essential. Ability to supervise and guide direct reports Sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge to be able to read and understand technical literature to use the information to develop and modify procedures so that it can be used in our specific situation(s). Type of workload requires a self-motivated and scientifically interested person.
