Description of Work

Salary Grade NC06 Salary Range $33,272 - $58,226

The primary purpose will involve the performance of Contributing level duties in the preventive maintenance, inspections, repair, and rebuilding of gasoline or diesel powered, light to heavy equipment found within the DOT fleet. Preventive Maintenance, inspections on light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Contributing Level repair, rebuild, or maintain light or heavy equipment. Prepare new equipment for use within the 14 highway divisions. Communicate with customers on a limited basis to ensure accurate description of complaints, and deal with suppliers as needed to procure the correct material for the job at hand. Perform other duties and responsibilities, routine, or emergency situations, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of automotive and/or heavy equipment repair

  • Knowledge of techniques and methods involved in determining and solving mechanical problems

  • Knowledge and demonstrated usage of diagnostic tools

  • Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend and explaining technical and instructional manuals.

  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy construction equipment

Additional Expectations

Some knowledge of the techniques and methods involved in determining and solving mechanical difficulties. Ability to use and operate the various machines and instruments commonly found in an automotive and/or heavy equipment repair shop. Some skill in the performance of moderately complex duties relating to the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment or ability to learn on the job. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Physical strength sufficient to work at heavy manual labor for considerable periods of time. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire or the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F
