The Hydraulics Unit provides technical expertise, guidance, design, and quality assurance to manage stormwater, riverine and coastal impacts in and around roadways for the protection of the public, the environment and NCDOT assets at every transportation project phase. We are looking for a staff engineer to support the Hydraulics Unit functions that include East and West Design Groups, East and West Division Operations Support, Stormwater Program, and Highway Floodplain Program. This position will support project delivery coordination with other Technical Services Units as well as Contract Standards and Development and the Alternative Delivery Unit.

In this role you will:

  • Support the State Hydraulics Engineer and Assistant Unit Heads in project delivery and unit functions.

  • Coordinate with other Technical Services Units and integrate hydraulic design with overall project plans.

  • Review project timelines and ensure hydraulic deliverables are completed within project schedules.

  • Perform quality checks on hydraulic design calculations, plans, and reports.

  • Review consultant-submitted designs and ensure they meet standards.

  • Support the development of staff training and development of innovative solutions.

  • Provide contract support and professional engineering firm coordination.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge of hydraulic principles, stormwater management, floodplain analysis, and proficiency in tools like HEC-RAS and HY-8.

  • Experience in managing project timelines, collaborating across units, and integrating hydraulic designs into comprehensive project plans.

  • Experience in reviewing and ensuring the accuracy of hydraulic designs, reports, and consultant submissions in compliance with standards.

  • Experience in developing staff training programs and fostering innovative solutions for hydraulic engineering challenges.

  • Knowledge of contract management and effective coordination with professional engineering firms to meet project requirements.

Additional Expectations

Candidate must possess good oral and written communication skills with varied audiences and can work well within a group setting with limited supervision. Considerable knowledge and understanding of concepts, practices, and theories used in hydrology and hydraulics and the ability to use it in practice. Ability to provide consultation to clients or others related to drainage studies and complex hydraulic design situations. Ability to develop and/or create informational products; manage hydraulic design projects; plan, develop and implement short-term strategies.

Occasional overnight travel required. Field work may require traversing steep terrain, thick undergrowth, working around open water, near traffic, and in adverse weather conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
