Class Summary

Assigned to: Hogadon Ski Basin

Part-Time Seasonal (Evening Shifts)

These positions will assist with seasonal activities at Hogadon Basin Ski Area, with emphasis on night-time ski patrol activities.

Incumbents are responsible for monitoring and maintaining ski trail conditions and providing first aid to skiers.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Receives direction from the Ski Area Superintendent or higher-level management staff.

Typical Class Essential Duties

  1. Performs a variety of complex and specialized work relating to ski maintenance duties including grounds maintenance and repair duties, snow removal, inventory checks, operating and maintaining ski lifts, and light construction assignments.

  2. Conducts facility and ground inspections and implements corrective actions.

  3. Performs assessment, packing, and transportation of patients; provides first aid for injured customers and determines the need for additional medical care; documents and records all accidents per slope, location, and terrain park features.

    1. Trains, leads, and coordinates volunteers, patrol staff, and seasonal workers, including prioritizing hill sweeps, monitoring attendance, maintaining equipment retrieval, and training staff on lift evacuation techniques.

    2. Conducts hill sweeps to identify, fix, remove, or mark ski area hazards and unsafe conditions; opens and closes ski trails as conditions dictate.

    3. Operates various types of snow grooming and snow making equipment, mowers, and lawn trimming equipment; inspects equipment for proper performance and safety; performs routine maintenance and/or repairs equipment.

    4. Prepares a variety of operational records and reports.

    5. Orders and maintains first aid supplies and equipment as assigned.

    6. Participates and assists in the coordination and administration of user groups, special projects, events, and/or programs as assigned.

    7. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.

    8. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

• Operation, maintenance, and repair requirements of power-driven equipment.

• Basic infrastructure and maintenance practices and procedures preferred.

• Grounds maintenance skills, including but not limited to, mowing, planting, weeding, pruning, irrigation, fertilization, turf and/or pest control, and snow removal.

• Applicable tools and equipment utilized in the trade.

• Ski patrol principles and practices.

• Ski lift operations.

• First aid techniques.

• Computers and related software applications

Abilities (position requirements at entry):

Ability to:

• Work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays as needed.

• Perform manual labor.

• Assess problems in the field and conduct measures to correct problems.

• Safely operate, service, check, and load a variety of hand tools and power-driven equipment; attach auxiliary pieces of equipment to power-driven equipment.

• Demonstrate advanced skill level in alpine skiing and toboggan handling.

• Assign, inspect, and coordinate the work of seasonal employees and ski area volunteers regarding first aid issues.

• Safely work around pesticides and chemicals in different environmental settings.

• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

• Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

• Work both independently and as part of a team.

• Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values.

Training, Experience & Certifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Minimum of two years of experience in ski area operations or patrol.

LICENSING and CERTIFICATIONS

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Outdoor Emergency Care Medical Technician (OEC-T) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification, within one (1) year of hire.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License, within one (1) year of hire.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Wyoming Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.

• Possession of ISA Certified Arborist Certification preferred.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include:

• Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste

• Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems

• CDL operations and driving

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, lifting, gripping/grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Incumbents are frequently subject to prolonged sitting, as well as standing, walking, or climbing relatively steep inclines and/or ladders on snow covered and icy surfaces. Physically demanding manual labor such as shoveling, raking, and digging is likely. Exposure to moving mechanical equipment and loud noise is expected. Incumbents are subject to frequent environmental exposures to dusts, odors, chemicals, sun, cold, moisture, and other extreme climate/weather conditions. Required personal protective equipment includes appropriate outerwear and footwear for outdoor winter weather, gloves, hearing protectors, and eye protectors.
