Job Description

The Research Associate will perform independent or supervisory roles in research activities requiring an advanced level of knowledge in a field of science or learning, are predominantly intellectual and varied in character, and require consistent use of discretion and judgment, such as assessing newly released or popular cultivars, nutrient management, the effect of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) on rice crop production, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient uptake. Prepare proposals for funding agencies, operation of research equipment, supervision of graduate students and other lab/field personnel in research.

Responsibilities:

  • Assistance with rice crop planting, field crop management

  • Implementation of on-farm trials (requires driving an Agency vehicle)

  • Sampling and analysis of soil , water, greenhouse gas samples , and sampling of plant biomass growth

  • Using a GC to conduct gas sample analyses

  • Data integration and analysis

  • Design, plan, conduct and coordinate experiments in support of various research projects

  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques of routine research; keep detailed records of data

  • Use computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results

  • Summarize results for inclusion in scientific and clientele oriented publications

  • Prepare and write proposals to funding agencies; maintain financial accounts related to research projects

  • Supervise undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research

  • Install, operate and/or repair research equipment

  • Other duties as required

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in soil science, agronomy, biology, or similar field from accredited institution

  • Two years of related professional experience

    Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience with field operations including planter and fertilizer rig uses will be preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interest in sustainable agriculture research and field operations

  • Ability to work independently and operate field equipment including tractors

  • Must meet eligibility requirements for work in the U.S. by the start date and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment

  • Must have a valid Texas driver's license

  • Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and/or technical equipment

  • Ability to effectively utilize a computer and applicable software to create databases, perform statistical analyses, present data and perform other computer related tasks. Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.

Salary:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
