Job Description:

1) Create an assessment of landowner needs and identify opportunities to develop and support Prescribed Burn Associations to facilitate the use of prescribed fire for agricultural, habitat restoration, and/or wildfire mitigation in the defined geographic focal area.

2) Develop web-based resources for supporting for Prescribed Burn Associations as defined by their needs and gaps in knowledge.

3) Lead the development and delivery of landowner workshops to generate interest in prescribed fire as a landscape tool.

4) Serve as a liaison across State Agencies and NGOs to effectively articulate the incentives, services, and support available to private landowners to use prescribed fire as a tool for agriculture, habitat restoration, and/or wildfire mitigation. This includes identifying and communicating to such agencies and organizations where there are gaps inhibiting the use of prescribed fire by private landowners.

5) Provide leadership , in collaboration with PBAT leaders, to facilitate the formation of PBAs or other forms of landowner cooperatives as may be appropriate. This includes:

  • Advising landowners on the development of organizational documentation, the pros-and-cons of a 501(c)(3), and steps to form a PBA; and

  • Active engagement, check-in, and overall assistance with the landowner group to get them started actively prescribed burning.

    6) Seeks to identify grants and other funding opportunities and leads the writing of applications for grants to facilitate the formation of PBAs with equipment and in-depth training. Where appropriate, this may include existing PBAs that require equipment refresh or in-depth training.

    7) Encourages the development of relationships between private landowner groups and county government officials and Volunteer Fire Departments. This includes facilitating the education of county and VFD officials on the benefits of prescribed fire.

    8) Serves as an advisor to the PBAT board of directors with regular updates on accomplishments and obstacles.

Required Education and Experience:-Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.-Four years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Basic computer skills

Good public speaking skills, good written and verbal communication skills

Ability to multi task and work cooperatively with others.

Self motivated.

Good organizational skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proficient in social media production, development and presentation of educational material.

Grant writing skills.

Ability to coordinate and manage both in-person and virtual meetings.

Familiar with the benefits of and techniques required to use prescribed fire as a tool for agriculture, habitat restoration, and/or wildfire mitigation in open grasslands and savannahs.

Ability to deliver high quality classroom and field instruction on topics such as fire behavior, operational safety, fire effects, smoke management, fire planning, and fire weather to diverse audiences.

Positive reputation within the fire and/or forest community.

Record of safe and effective prescribed fire experience.

Experience leading prescribed fires in Texas.
