What We Want

The Learning Communities are seeking an enthusiastic and energetic Program Assistant to help with events and programming that enable incoming freshmen to succeed in all majors at Texas A&M. The Century and Century Plus Scholars are an accomplished group of incoming freshmen who have been successful in their high schools under difficult circumstances, chosen from high schools which do not send a large number of students to TAMU.

What You Need to Know

Salary Range: $18.00/hr - $20.00/hr (Based on selected hire’s qualifications)

Cover Letter & Resume: A cover letter and resume are strongly recommended.

Other Requirements and Factors: Must be able to work occasional weekend hours and periodic early evening hours.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Organizational planning and problem solving ability

  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in a changing, collaborative team environment while exercising initiative to accomplish tasks

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree

  • Experience with program and event organization, particularly for freshman learning community programs or Living Learning Communities

  • Experience working with first generation, low income, and/or under-represented college students

  • Some experience in office administration or project management

  • Direct experience with managing learning communities

  • Community building experience

Responsibilities

Program Coordination Support

  • Assists with preparation for Learning Communities meetings, workshops, retreats, resource tables, advising sessions, and other special events, including making room reservations, scheduling catering services, setting up for events, and preparing any accompanying materials.

Logistical Support

  • Assists in monitoring of LAUNCH student worker, peer mentor and graduate assistant tasks and activities

  • Assists in the inventory and purchasing of program materials and supplies

  • Assists with the preparation of expense reports and travel arrangements

  • Assists with record keeping, assessment and reporting efforts

  • Researches and recommends changes to existing programs

Student Mentoring

  • Assists with monitoring deadlines and requirements students must meet to progress in their degrees and meet scholarship requirements

  • Assists with preparing peer mentors for seminar presentations, program events, and student one-on-ones

  • Assists in maintaining program databases, contact and subscriber lists, and other spreadsheets

Customer and Student Relations

  • Serves as the initial point of contact for Learning Communities program information and coordinates responses to requests for program information, including answering phone calls and faxes, maintaining the Learning Communities or specific program email inboxes, occasionally giving presentations to student groups and departments, and generally being available for scheduled program activities

  • Assists with the Learning Communities website, promotional materials and news releases, including editing, content creation, proofing, and publishing

  • Maintains specific program materials for availability on the website

  • Assists with coordination of social media for Learning Communities. Performs other duties as assigned
