Under the supervision of the Radiology Manager, the MRI Technologist is responsible for providing MRI examinations for diagnosis and treatment of patients in a professional, caring, and efficient manner; provide MRI data for diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs magnetic resonance imaging studies. Confers with the Radiologists to establish protocols of non-standard examinations and determines technical factors to complete the exam. Receives patients, explain method of examination, and positions patient, performs IV puncture and administers IV contrast agent as indicated. Independently performs and completes routine examination.

  • Evaluates the nature of critical and urgent procedures and arranges patient priorities to accommodate the Stat orders. Maintains records of patients imaged and type of examinations performed including protocols used.

  • Monitors the use of supplies and orders supplies as needed. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field and implements those which would improve the operation of the service.

  • Performs or monitors safety checks on patients, employees and visitors to comply with the safety standards regarding ferrous objects and cardiac pacemakers prior to those persons entering the environment of the magnetic field.

  • Monitors the examinations by checking computations, performances, and results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer generated data and images. Sends images to the PACS. Ensures equipment is operated within manufactures guidelines.

  • Assist with obtaining acceptable images, uploading and charts needed information for ACR renewal.

  • Prints orders and previous reports to prepare for the next imaging day.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge:

  • Professional knowledge of diagnostic technologist principles, practices, concepts, and anatomy of three-dimensional relationships sufficient to perform a full range of duties connected to MRI.

  • Knowledge of MRI standards to monitor and evaluate work of technologists.

  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to consult with physicians and physicists on logical protocols to follow in attempting to establish or confirm the diagnosis of a patient.

  • Practical knowledge of computer operations to ensure proper control of patient data input and to ensure accuracy of data output.

  • Knowledge of requirements sufficient to ensure that procedures relative to patients, employees, and visitors are consistent with requirements for MRI safety.

  • Knowledge of basic nursing practices related to MRI, including emergency procedures, sterile practices, infection control techniques (universal precautions), and emergency cardiac arrest techniques (CPR).

Skills & Abilities:

  • Operating computer and MRI software.

  • Professionalism when using the telephone.

  • Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, discretion and decision-making to achieve organizational objectives.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical community, internal staff, physicians, and management.

  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changes in job-specific functions as assigned by a supervisor.

  • Capability of communicating information effectively with staff and physicians.

  • Ability to conduct self in a positive, professional manner than promotes positive customer relations with physicians, staff, and patients.

  • Maintain proper dress code and adhere to company policies as pertains to position.

  • Accepts responsibility for individual actions including activities that may be potentially considered inappropriate, illegal, or fraudulent.

Education: Associates degree in an allied health field or a bachelor’s degree and certification in another clinical imaging field with six months of supervised clinical MRI scanning experience. Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR). Or be certified by ARRT and/or appropriate state licensure and have six (6) months of supervised clinical MRI scanning experience.

Experience: Minimum six (6) months of supervised clinical MRI scanning experience.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods, work longer than eight (8) hour shifts, and to work both day/evening shifts. Work may hand dexterity as well as the need to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Environmental/Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent personal and telephone contact with patients and with testing sites and surgery departments. Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Contact involves dealing with injured sick people.
