National Park Service Maintenance Worker in United States

Summary This position is located in Blue Ridge Parkway, in the Maintenance and Engineering Division. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 06/05/2024 whichever comes first. Responsibilities Major Duties: The position is a Maintenance Worker for the Montebello/James River Sub-District of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The position has the option of duty stations, either in Montebello, Virginia or Big Island, Virginia. The primary purpose of the position is to perform water utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent is engaged in performing a variety of complex repairs, maintenance, adjustments, modifications and preventive maintenance on facilities, equipment, and system. Area/Duty Station The Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles along the crest of the southern Appalachian Mountains through North Carolina and Virginia between two eastern national parks - Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. Montebello, Virginia - The duty station is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Montebello Maintenance Area, which boarders three counties in Virginia: Augusta, Rockbridge and Nelson. The duty station is located approximately 25 miles from Lexington, VA and 30 miles from Waynesboro, VA. All goods and services are available in Lexington, Waynesboro and the surrounding communities. Big Island, Virginia - The duty station is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the James River Maintenance Area, which is located in Bedford, Virginia, approximately 20 miles from Lynchburg, Virginia. Bedford boasts the Blue Ridge Mountains to the north, Smith Mountain Lake to the south, Lynchburg to the east, and Roanoke to the west. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must possess or obtain with in 12 months of appointment and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL). You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Virginia Waterworks Operator License Level 6 within 12 months of appointment. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess. You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You must obtain and maintain a current NPS Working Sawyer certification within 12 months of appointment. Qualifications Requirements Continued: Applicants must be at least (1) 18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability to interpret instruction, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders of scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposure to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders of scaffolding. Exposure to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
