Class Summary

Assigned to: Casper Police Department - Metro Animal Services

1 Full-Time Position and 2 Part-Time Positions Available

Full-Time Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts (6am-5pm & 7am-6pm)

Sunday - Wednesday (Off: Thursday, Friday, and Saturday)

Wednesday - Saturday (Off: Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday)

Typically, all positions will begin being paid at the beginning of the pay range listed above.

Incumbents are responsible for the cleanliness and appearance of the Metro Animal Services facility.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Receives direction from the Metro Animal Services Superintendent or higher-level management staff.

Typical Class Essential Duties

  1. Performs a variety of custodial type duties involving the cleanliness and appearance of the facility including but not limited to cleaning and disinfecting animal holding areas.

    1. Assists customers with stray animal intake; evaluates animals for adoption potential; and completes paperwork and data entry as necessary.

    2. Cares for animals which include: administering medications, microchips, vaccinations, monitoring wounds and injuries, and exercising dogs.

    3. Monitors the health of animals and reports sick, injured or unhealthy animals to immediate supervisor.

    4. Monitors supply inventory levels and reports needed supplies to immediate supervisor.

    5. Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules and general information about the facility, operations and/or event.

    6. Runs business related errands to various locations, including taking animals to veterinary appointments.

    7. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.

    8. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

• Basic cleaning methods, equipment, and supplies preferred.

• Customer service principles.

• Proper disposal of chemicals and various waste preferred.

• Basic principles of health and sanitation standards.

• Basic safety.

Abilities (position requirements at entry):

Ability to:

• Work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays as needed.

• Be flexible with assignments which may change.

• Perform basic office and computer tasks.

• Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values.

• Assess the temperament and properly handle animals.

• Perform euthanasia on selected animals.

• Learn and apply chemicals and chemical mixtures.

• Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.

• Safely operate and handle equipment and supplies.

• Monitor inventory.

• Cleaning and sanitizing kennels and other areas of the facility.

• Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• Maintain a neat and professional appearance.

• Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

• Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.

• Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.

• Oral and written communication sufficient to exchange or convey information and to provide and receive work direction.

Training, Experience & Certifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Minimum of six (6) months experience working in a customer service capacity preferred.

LICENSING and CERTIFICATIONS

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification as a Euthanasia Technician through the State of Wyoming, within twelve (12) months of hire.

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a registration from the Wyoming State Board of Pharmacy, within twelve (12) months of hire.

• Possession of a valid Wyoming Driver’s License preferred.

Employment with the City of Casper is contingent upon a successful background screen and pre-employment drug test. Applicants who have failed a pre-employment screen or have been terminated from the City of Casper are ineligible for employment consideration for 12 months. You will become eligible for consideration 12 months from the date of your incident (pre-employment screen or termination).

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must utilize direct deposit for payroll purposes.

Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

City of Casper employees that perform safety-sensitive tasks are subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing. These tasks include, but may not be limited to:

• Emergency response/rescue

• Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste

• Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems

• Maintaining City computer and data systems including networks, servers, communication systems, etc.

• Driving for the City of Casper, whether essential or non-essential

• Operating power-driven machinery or equipment

• Handling confidential information, including personnel, health, financial, or attorney-client information

• Working with or around children

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up-to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up-to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects. Incumbents must have sufficient physical strength, mobility, and stamina to lift and/or move heavy animals and objects such as food bags, the dexterity and confidence to administer medications, being physical and mentally able to perform euthanasia of animals, the ability to monitor animals for signs of distress or disease, and is able to deal with animals even when they are stressed, ill or in pain. Incumbents will walk or stand for extended periods of time; frequently working in a bent position. May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises such as continuous dog barking and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
