GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Review building construction documents (plans and specifications) to ensure compliance with minimum standards imposed by state statutes, which adhere to the international building, existing building, mechanical, fire, and fuel gas codes; physically inspect construction sites to ensure the construction of public buildings are built to the approved plan review for the building; regularly inspects existing public buildings and other inhabited structures to detect hazards and violations of State adopted International Codes. Successful candidate may reside in or relocate to the Southwest area of Wyoming, which could include but is not limited to the following counties: Lincoln, Sweetwater, Sublette, and Uinta.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Performs fire and building inspections in institutional, commercial, and industrial occupancies, including related inspection reports and documentation.

  • Ensures that companies comply with agency rules, agency orders, and permit stipulations through field investigations.

  • Provides technical assistance to public and private interests regarding regulations and practices.

  • Responds to complaints and mediate disputes.

  • Writes non-compliance letters, prepares reports and hearing exhibits, and provides testimony at hearings.

  • Interacts with other state and federal agency officials and law enforcement personnel.

  • Helps develop and review new regulations.

  • Analyzes, examines, and evaluates documents to determine compliance with adopted codes.

  • Witnesses tests and operations.

  • Examines, analyzes, and evaluates building construction plans to be utilized by the public, noting safety factors and making conclusions and recommendations.

  • Provides education and enforces compliance.

  • Conducts inspections pursuant to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference may be given to applicants with certification as a fire prevention/fire safety inspector or building inspector through the International Code Council (ICC).

** Agency requires that the applicant be certified as a fire inspector (Fire Inspector I & Fire Inspector II) in the International Fire Code (ICC) within one year from the date of hire.

Successful candidate may reside in or relocate to the Southwest area of Wyoming, which could include but is not limited to the following counties: Lincoln, Sweetwater, Sublette, Uinta

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws.

  • Knowledge of agency policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of inspections and investigations.

  • Knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment.

  • Knowledge of modern and complex techniques and practices of building construction.

  • Knowledge of basic engineering.

  • Knowledge of federal, and state codes and regulations, including building, mechanical, electrical, and fire codes.

  • Skill in the use of computers, tablets, and cellular technology devices.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree

Experience:

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Inspection)

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Inspection)

None

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in hazardous conditions.

  • A background check and fingerprinting will be conducted for this position.

  • Frequent travel and overnight stays are required weekly.
