About Texas A&M University-KingsvilleChartered in 1917 and opened in 1925, the University is the founding institution of higher learning in South Texas. It is preparing for its second century as it builds on the tradition of excellence that has defined its first 100 years. Shortly after beginning life as South Texas State Teachers College, the University grew to develop various cornerstone academic programs, including programs in agriculture and engineering. As its mission expanded, the institution’s name has changed to reflect its evolving scope. Its first name change, Texas College of Arts and Industries, came in 1929. In 1967, the name was changed to Texas A&I University. The University became a member of the Texas A&M University System in 1989 and, in 1993, changed its name to Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

More than 62 percent of Texas A&M University-Kingsville's approximately 6,553 students are from South Texas, a reflection of the University’s deep commitment to serving the region. The student population also includes students representing 40 states and 35 countries. About 80 percent of students are undergraduates. Ethnically, the campus reflects the area's demographics—70 percent of students are Hispanic, 15 percent white, and 4 percent African American. About 9 percent are international students.

The Position

The University seeks an innovative and dynamic leader of its football program, who will work with students, faculty, staff, and alumni across the University to instill excellence in its football program and achieve unprecedented levels of success. The head coach is expected to recruit and retain exceptional coaches and student-athletes, while promoting academic and athletic excellence for the program. The Head Football Coach will direct all phases of the day-to-day operations of the Texas A&M University-Kingsville football program and will work with the Executive Director of Athletics and other administrators to support the overall goals and objectives of the University.

Requirements for the Position

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a minimum of five years of coaching experience is required. Prior head coaching or collegiate coaching experience is preferred.

  • Provide leadership in the planning and operation of the program.

  • A proven track record of accomplishment and planning, on the field coaching and student-athlete development.

  • Successfully develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting plan while supporting high performing student-athletes through to graduation.

  • Engage in retention initiatives for student-athletes through collaboration with numerous University offices.

  • Ability to prepare, organize, design and successfully implement effective practice plans, off-season programs, scouting reports, and recruiting systems.

  • Effective and timely budget management, equipment oversight, and travel planning.

  • Ability to manage a large staff and work cooperatively across the campus community.

  • Adherence to NCAA D. II, Lone Star Conference, and Texas A&M University-Kingsville rules and regulations.

  • Ability to motivate and effectively communicate with student-athletes.

  • A commitment to community engagement, fund raising and effective public relations.

  • Enforce discipline and good sportsmanship behavior of coaches, graduate assistants, and student-athletes.

  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches in cooperation with the Executive Director of Athletics.

  • Assess and review the program and recommend changes and improvements to the Executive Director of Athletics.
