The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Purpose

The Environmental Representative I will provide technical, compliance and operational advice and support across all areas of the mine site to ensure compliance with all legal requirements and other commitments (including company standards and international best management practices).

The span of control of the Environmental Department at Merian includes legal compliance, permitting, multi-vector monitoring programs, project engineering design and implementation, accountability for site-wide water management and balance, erosion and sediment control and closure planning, cost estimates and concurrent reclamation.

The Environmental Representative I contributes in these areas to deliver department objectives, under the guidance of senior team members as they develop professional their skills and competencies.

Essential Duties

  • Implement comprehensive environmental audits and inspections, monitoring activities, data analysis, interpretation and reporting and other technical skills aligned with Newmont and Risk Management System (RMS) standards.

  • Assist to prepare complex Environmental Management Plans, Risk Assessments, and Continuous Improvement Plans and conduct internal and external audits to verify both site and business partners operate in compliance with all legal requirements, Newmont Standards and other commitments.

  • Complete administrative and coordination tasks for the Department, including document control, invoicing, updating of registers and trackers, requisitions etc. by using Newmont management systems e.g. Enablon, MP5, Discovery and Prospector administration.

  • Design and deliver education and awareness programs so that employees are aware of their responsibilities, the environmental impacts and risks associated with the activities and apply procedures to control these risks.

  • Evaluate the severity of environmental impact events, their effect on the environment, and determine proper response or escalation.

Training & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor degree from a University institution in the field of environmental sciences, engineering, or related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in environmental management or specifically relevant alternative field within mining or construction industries.

  • Experience in the gold mining industry, and knowledge of associated environmental risks and management systems.

  • Awareness of all Newmont Environmental Management Standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders regularly to meet targets.

  • Experience operating Risk Management System (RMS) or similar management system.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Personal commitment to health and safety of self and others.

  • Adopts professional standards.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Dutch

  • Must have valid light Surinamese driver’s license (Category B), or ability to obtain this.

  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office suite, database management (particularly MS-SharePoint, Discovery, Enablon, MP5, SAP).

  • Must demonstrate competency and willing attitude towards completing tasks.

  • Skilled at multi-tasking, organizing and prioritizing workload and deliverables.

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

Working Conditions

  • The position is located at the Merian mine site. The incumbent must be willing and able to live in a remote mining accommodation camp for extended periods as per the work schedule.

  • Position may be required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites.

  • Position is available for National personnel on a rotational schedule.

  • Must comply with health and safety regulations, company policies, procedures, and the company's environmental policy.

  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.

  • Walk on rough, uneven, inclined, wet terrain, and climb stairs.

  • Wear personal protective equipment including hardhat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, earplugs, gloves, or any other equipment to perform duties safely.
