GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Correctional Sergeants supervise a designated shift within the correctional facility, overseeing inmates and staff members. This position may serve as Watch Commander and carry out the Lieutenant's duties in their absence. This position generates reports and performance evaluations, manages workflow, and ensures that policies and procedures are followed. Responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Supervises a designated shift on a minimum-security unit or assists and provides relief supervision to Correctional Lieutenants on the maximum or medium security units at a large correctional facility, or supervises a designated shift at a minimum-security facility; or assists and provides relief supervision to correctional lieutenants.

  • Writes incident reports in a prescribed format.

  • Check weapons and ammunition storage facilities at regular intervals.

  • Ensure daily activities of inmates and staff is adhered to.

  • Ensure Security Equipment is in good working order and order repairs.

  • Conducts performance appraisals of Officers and Corporals.

  • Ensures staff reports are timely and accurate.

  • Responsible for the management and review of the count of inmates.

  • Investigates reports of inmates who may pose a threat to the safety and security of the institution; ensures the safety of inmates.

  • Reviews various reporting processes and paperwork of staff.

  • Ensures shakedowns are complete within the unit.

  • Serves or processes disciplinary papers or hearings.

  • Ensures tool control within the unit is maintained.

  • Ensures discipline and order are maintained.

  • Investigate inmate conflicts.

  • Performs all other duties of a corporal and officer.

  • Serves as Watch Commander at WHCC

  • Conducts investigations on rule violations.

  • Supervises electronic control systems.

  • Identifies and resolves issues specific to the operations of the facility.

  • Responsible for ensuring a safe and enjoyable workplace including participation in initiatives designed to promote a positive work environment.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to applicants with 4-6 years of experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Corporal.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures established for the work system.

  • Knowledge of oral communication with prisoners in the context of the program.

  • Knowledge of interpersonal relations as applied to interaction with prisoners.

  • Knowledge of work management and work leadership.

  • Knowledge of the philosophy of custody/security within a prison setting.

  • Knowledge of techniques and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.

  • Knowledge of the use of security devices and the Inmates Rules Handbook.

  • Knowledge of supervision.

  • Knowledge of motivation and initiative in completing assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Corporal

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.

OR

Education & Experience Substitution:

3-5 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Corporal

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required; and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.
