Work with Bus Mechanics as assigned and complete Bus Apprentice Program to become journeyman mechanic. Attend and complete classroom and on-the-job instruction. Demonstrated competence is required to become a journeyman mechanic.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and service offerings.
Essential Functions
Observe and perform work with assigned journeyman mechanic to learn all required units of maintenance and repair.
Attend classroom training as scheduled, take written and oral tests.
As skills or systems are learned, consistently demonstrate competence through observed performance.
Complete, section by section, the ICS Home Study Course.
Position Requirements
A minimum of a High School Diploma/G.E.D. is required.
An Associate's Degree in Diesel Service Technology is required
OR
Two (2) years electrical or mechanical experience and education related to diesel, automotive service machinist or closely related background is required
OR
Pass the classes recommended by the Bus Maintenance JATC or relative experience and technical skill which will be evaluated by a combination of Bus maintenance and training department, and meets attendance, discipline and driver license requirements. [Article 3. Section 22]
AND
Two (2) years of automotive or diesel mechanic experience is preferred.
One (1) year of demonstrated electrical systems/schematics experience is preferred.
Possession of current/valid or ability to obtain Class "A or B" CDL issued by Oregon or Washington with Passenger Endorsement and No Restrictions on Airbrakes; ability to pass a driving record check meeting TriMet driving record standards is required.
Selection Criteria
Knowledge of diesel, automotive, machinist or other technical mechanical principles.
Knowledge of electronic systems and schematics and electrical principles.
Ability to learn mechanical functions/skills.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
Must pass required physical examination with drug screen, and meet the physical activity requirements of the job, including the ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry at least 50 pounds or use appropriate lifting equipment and techniques for heavier items.
Must meet height and weight restrictions to work safely in confined spaces, utilize equipment, and wear necessary PPE, including fall restraint devices.
Type of Position / Grade/FLSA
Union, Non-Exempt, Regular Full-time. Wage: $27.91 - $39.12 per hour. Wage will be in accordance with the current Working and Wage Agreement, effective 12/01/2024.
