Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing skilled and specialized work in the set-up and maintenance of auditorium stages, related facilities, and equipment. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

This position is "unclassified" and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Location

3875 N. St. Mary's St. (Position will require frequent local travel to various locations)

Work Hours

Schedules will vary with shifts being subject to change to include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holiday shift work schedules as dictated by business needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Arranges props and equipment and prepares for stage attractions, lectures, and dances to include delivering audio/visual equipment using City vehicles to various City-wide locations.

  • Inspects and repairs gird lofts and fly gallery and inspects and replaces border lights, which involves occasionally lifting and carrying equipment or parts weighing 25 pounds.

  • Prepares lighting equipment and arranges and operates lights.

  • Installs and operates sound amplification equipment in meeting areas and production areas.

  • Inventories and monitors sound and lighting equipment to assure availability and proper operations when needed.

  • Monitors the maintenance or use of stage facilities and equipment.

  • Assists in the preparation and use of special equipment and props for special productions to include travel to event locations as well as travel to event coordination meetings at various City-wide locations.

  • Determines safe and proper work methods in setting up stage props and lighting.

  • Purchases various equipment or replacement parts for audio/visual equipment from various specialty locations throughout the City.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).

  • Two (2) years of experience setting up stage productions.

  • Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years experience operating, maintaining, and repairing sound and video equipment for use at live events, such as concerts, performances, meetings, webinars, and distance learning.

  • Experience with self-contained mobile stages or portable stage set-ups.

  • Experience with moving, lifting, and setting up sound equipment with care.

  • Experience in multi-camera recording.

  • Experience in stage lighting design, stage rigging, and troubleshooting.

  • Experience with computers and Microsoft Office software components.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of microphone usage and placement and speaker placement and coverage.

  • Knowledge of audio test equipment (i.e. real-time analyzers, meters, scopes).

  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and repairs.

  • Knowledge of photography and dark room procedures.

  • Knowledge of acoustics, electrical, rigging, and sound system design.

  • Knowledge of City, State, and Federal laws on electrical safety and construction.

  • Knowledge of City, State, and national building and electrical fire codes and standards.

  • Skill in operating and adjusting audio-mixing consoles, processing, and amplifications.

  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing electronic audio and lighting equipment.

  • Ability to read diagrams and schematics of equipment.

  • Ability to evaluate needs and requirements and provide audio and recording assistance.

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are primarily in an inside environment. May be exposed to electrical hazards.
