Job Description
Position: Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist - Wildlife Damage Management (12-month, 100% Extension), Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management, Texas A&M University
Location: Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Stephenville, Texas
Overview: The Wildlife Damage Management Extension Specialist will develop and deliver Extension educational programming with supporting applied research designed to resolve problems of importance for management and mitigation of damage related to wildlife, with an emphasis on feral hogs.
Primary Responsibilities:
Develop an Extension program in wildlife and feral hog damage management across central and north Texas.
Provide technical expertise on wildlife damage management, especially feral hogs.
Develop an applied research program to support Extension efforts in management and mitigation related to feral hogs.
Use traditional and innovative Extension outreach techniques to educate landowners/managers, representatives or wildlife and natural resource organizations, state and federal agencies and trade associations.
Provide support and training for Extension County Programs and County Agents.
Work closely with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Research personnel in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management and other relevant departments to develop a nationally recognized Extension program.
Cooperate and coordinate with USDA-APHIS/TWS, TPWD, USFWS), NGOs (East Foundation, TWA, Welder Wildlife Foundation), regional universities (Tarleton State University, Sul Ross State University), and other entities across Texas to identify priority needs and achieve common wildlife management goals.
Coordinate Extension programming and applied research with closely aligned faculty/staff at the AgriLife Center at Stephenville, Texas and other AgriLife Centers across the state as appropriate.
Secure funding from internal and external sources and publish results of creative Extension and applied research projects in appropriate outlets including Extension factsheets/bulletins, web sites/social media, peer-reviewed outlets and trade publications.
Participate, as practical, in mentoring/training graduate students and provide service to the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management, the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Stephenville, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, and professional societies or organizations.
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. completed by December 31, 2024, in Wildlife Management, Ecology, Conservation or a closely related discipline.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent managerial skills.
Desirable Qualifications
Advanced knowledge and experience in wildlife damage and/or feral hog management.
The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting outreach and applied research in wildlife damage management or related area to facilitate Extension programming.
Evidence of scholarship through scientific and/or Extension presentations and publications.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse audiences including faculty, stakeholders, and other clientele.
Continued employment in this position is contingent upon availability of funds.
Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Stephenville: The Stephenville Center is located in north-central Texas. The primary agricultural and natural resource industries in this area are dairy, cattle, hay, peanut, pecan, viticulture, biofuel, and equine. The Stephenville Center houses 5 Research and 6 Extension faculty. Facilities include greenhouses, laboratory and office space, classroom, and conference rooms. The Center has approximately 170 acres of irrigated cropland with several irrigation systems including 2 center pivots, 5 irrigation wells and an additional 400 acres capable of accommodating rain fed crops, animal and range and pasture research. The Center recently began operation and management of the Slaughter-Harris Ranch (https://agrilifetoday.tamu.edu/2023/08/18/historic-slaughter-harris-ranch-to-serve-agrilife-research-carbon-and-greenhouse-gas-mitigation-initiatives/) , a 900 ac property with 3 domestic wells for livestock production research and Brazos River water rights available for irrigation; plans are to utilize this facility for carbon and greenhouse gas mitigation initiatives. Stephenville, Texas is home to Tarleton State University, which is a member of the Texas A&M University System and will provide unique opportunities for cooperative research and access to students. Tarleton and The Stephenville Center operate the Southwest Regional Dairy Center. The SWRDC houses 300-400 lactating dairy cows in free-stall barns and cows are owned by a private producer. Administrative Relationships: The incumbent will be a faculty member in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management at Texas A&M University, supervised by the Associate Department Head for Extension and the Department Head. Oversight of the faculty promotion process for this position will be the responsibility of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service through its own Promotion Committee. The Extension Wildlife Damage Management Specialist will be located at the Stephenville Research and Extension Center and will work with faculty, staff, and administrative staff at the Center.
Salary and Benefits: Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
