V2X Mechanic Shop Supervisor (Marine) in Marshall Islands

Overview

This position will be physically located in The Marshall Islands in support of LOGCAP

Under the supervision and direction of the Marine Repair Superintendent, the Marine Mechanic Shop Supervisor oversees the repairs and maintenance of all mechanical systems and engines aboard vessels assigned to USAG-KA. Includes maintenance and repairs to marine engines, Hamilton water jets, and associated systems. Work is performed in port, or on-board moored vessels. Infrequently, there may be a requirement to work on board a vessel as part of post-repair sea trials (i.e., underway). All work is performed in accordance with Corporate Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures and applicable U.S. Army regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

  • Oversees the operation of the engine shop to ensure assigned preventive maintenance and/or repairs are completed using good workmanship.

  • Completes assigned preventive maintenance and repairs on all mechanical equipment aboard vessels using good workmanship. Equipment includes engines, hydraulic systems, pumps, gears, vessel running gear, piping, valves, etc.

  • Assigns work to subordinates and monitors progress of repairs.

  • Ensures all repairs have been completed satisfactorily before equipment is returned to service.

  • Conducts on-the-job training of subordinate mechanics and vessel engineers, as required.

  • Troubleshoots vessel engineering issues and presents reliable solutions.

  • Establishes and maintains standard practice plans for maintenance and/or repairs for all mechanical equipment and systems.

  • Ensures repair facilities are kept neat, clean, and in good working order.

  • Prepares written reports per company and regulatory agency directives.

  • Maintains inventory and shop stock; submits purchase requests in a timely manner.

  • Maintains logs and maintenance records to capture maintenance history.

  • Generates and maintains service and oil sampling schedules.

  • Generates work plans for assigned projects, to include estimates of materials and labor required for completion.

  • Support all vessels’ Chief Engineers or Engineers, as directed.

  • Determines specific parts, supplies, and material requirements for each task.

  • Supports on-island vessel dry dockings, as well as, supporting maintenance and repairs on other equipment, and systems assigned to Marine Services.

  • Assists in operation, maintenance and repair of the Syncrolift.

  • Repair and maintenance of electro-hydraulic systems.

  • Repair and maintenance of air compressors.

  • Conducting of vessel Technical Inspections.

  • Ensures the proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for the assigned tasks is worn at all times.

  • Ensures safety, operational, and appearance standards are maintained by all subordinates.

  • Periodically serves as engineman aboard vessels, safely operating vessel equipment while underway.

  • Accurately maintains all required recordkeeping to track maintenance of vessels and equipment.

  • Ensure compliances with Federal, State, and Company policies and regulations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education if the degree is required.

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred:

  • Degree from a certified maritime vocational school or shipyard apprenticeship program;

  • DDEC 60 Series qualification school certificate for tear down and rebuild;

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine Document (MMD) with a QMED- oiler endorsement or higher-level license;

  • Experience:

  • Eight (8) years’ experience in repairing marine diesel engines and systems;

  • Three (3) years’ experience supervising a marine repair shop.

  • Experience with Detroit Diesel engines and associated electronic controls;

  • Experience with Hamilton Jets 362HJ.

  • Skills:

  • Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and storage requirements to meet compatibility of products based on hazard class is required.

  • Strong interpersonal skills are required.

  • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement is required.

  • Ability to prioritized responsibilities to handle a demanding workload is required.

  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy is required.

  • Advance ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in written form is required.

  • High-level organizational and planning skills, so that workflow is managed and accurate is required.

  • Working Conditions:

  • Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months).

  • Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.

  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

  • The Worker is frequently in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage pipes, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.

  • The worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.

  • Physical Requirements:

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

  • Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.

  • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.

  • Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
