Job Description
We are hiring Construction Inspectors to support the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project. This transformative undertaking is the largest highway construction project in Virginia's history, expanding nearly ten miles of the I-64 corridor in Norfolk and Hampton with new twin tunnels across the harbor. This project aims to increase capacity, ease major congestion, and enhance travel time reliability.
Responsibilities
Perform quality control of VDOT roadway construction for field soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing to ensure contract compliance.
Conduct materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density.
Review and test concrete deliveries in accordance with VDOT and ACI standards, including making cylinders for delivery to labs.
Verify construction of roadway and highway materials and placement to comply with drawings, VDOT specifications, standards, special provisions, and contract documents.
Monitor and observe limited contractual fieldwork under supervision, including excavations, storm drain piping installation, drainage facilities, concrete placement, soil and aggregate placement, road surfaces, and pile driving.
Advise inspector supervisors and contractor supervisors/foremen of non-conforming field tests.
Take field measurements of materials placed/tested and record daily production and test results.
Complete daily reports with attached VDOT materials testing forms.
Receive materials delivery tickets for compliance and submission to contractors.
Take assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Senior Inspectors.
Accurately record and report daily forms per project requirements.
Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and staff to resolve problems at the lowest level.
Adhere to project scope, schedule, and budget.
Review all work for completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
Submit accurate timesheets, mileage, and expense reports on time each week.
Review job site safety daily and ensure adherence to OSHA Safety Standards and corporate policies.
Maintain all required certifications and participate in training courses as required.
Understand all applicable industry standards and perform tasks per standards and client requirements.
Essential Skills
Experience with transportation, soils testing, construction, aggregate testing, asphalt, and DOT regulations.
Skilled in construction inspection, roadway construction, and concrete testing.
Active ACI Certification and Soils and Aggregate or Concrete or Erosion and Sediment certification.
Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
0-2+ years of experience in construction or working outdoors.
Ability to work night shifts and weekends when needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Certifications in Asphalt Field Level 1, Asphalt Field Level 2, Asphalt Plant Level 1, Asphalt Plant Level 2, VDOT Concrete, ACI Concrete Field Testing (preferred), WACEL Concrete Level I, and NICET Construction Materials Testing.
Experience with environmental fieldwork, tunnel and earthworks inspections.
Work Environment
This position is located outdoors in the field and on-site at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Inspectors may work night shifts and weekends with prior notice and will receive a night shift differential rate. The role offers significant overtime opportunities, company-paid certifications, and pay raises for acquired certifications. Inspectors will also have access to a paid gas card and company vehicle.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $30.00
