Description

THE HOSPITAL: When you need critical medical care, whether a surgery, laboratory work, bringing a new life into the world, or for those unexpected emergencies, you can trust Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) to address your needs. VCMC is a fully-integrated, comprehensive system of hospital, clinic and specialty services. The system provides access to health care to all residents of our county, with special emphasis on providing access to care for the underserved and those facing barriers.

THE POSITION: We are seeking two individuals who are trilingual in English, Spanish and Mixteco to join our hospital team. Under general supervision, the Mixteco Healthcare Interpreter will assist professional staff in providing interpretation and translation services regarding health care services, leveraging existing resources, and programs available to our Mixteco community . This position may also assist in providing referral, and program related services to culturally, economically, physically or mentally impaired or disadvantaged individuals in the community; and performs other duties as required.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will be able to speak and write in English and Spanish and speak in Mixteco. They will have experience explaining forms, medical information and procedures to people of various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, serving as a resource and/or contact for individuals and groups with diverse priorities. The candidate should also be proficient in using computers, including applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Additionally, the candidate should have practical experience in basic clerical and office procedures, including answering phones, taking messages, organizing and maintaining records and filing systems, and providing support to departmental staff on various projects.

WHAT WE OFFER:

The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package. Aside from our base salary range, an employee within this position may also be eligible for the following:

  • Educational/Bilingual Incentive - Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

  • Market Based Premium Pay (MBPP) - $4.50

  • Night Shift Differential: 5%-10%

  • Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. If you participate in the County sponsored 401(k) plan, the County will match a part of your contribution up to 3% of your salary, on a per pay period basis. Following five (5) years of continuous County service, an additional 2% non-elective contribution will be made to the 401(k) plan.

  • Health Plans - Y ou are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans.

  • Flexible Spending Accounts - Pre-tax benefit towards eligible medical, dental, and vision care expenses.

  • Pension Plan - Participation in the County's defined benefit pension plan. If eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - Ventura County Medical Center

Community Services Worker III is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for these positions only. There are currently two (2) Regular vacancies at Ventura County Medical Center.

Examples Of Duties

Specific assignments vary according to the program assigned but may include all or a combination of the tasks described below:

  • Answers inquiries and explains agency/program policies to individuals and groups within the Mixteco community;

  • Uses English, Spanish and Mixteco to explain medical procedures, diagnoses, treatment options, doctors' instructions, hospital policies, procedures, and protocols, to patients, their families, and the general public;

  • Uses English, Spanish, and Mixteco to translate patients' physical histories and symptoms of disorder; may obtain informed consent from the patient, next of kin, or legal guardian to receive treatment; explains and interprets patients' rights and responsibilities;

  • Translates forms, documents, and procedures to patients, family members, other involved parties, and the general public;

  • Refers individuals and families to available community educational, medical, legal and employment resources; follows-up on referrals or appointments scheduled;

  • Keeps records of clients served, payments received and clinic activities; orders supplies and prepares routine reports;

  • Keeps up to date on health program guidelines and requirements and assists in enrolling patients in programs;

  • Meets productivity and quality goals set by agency;

  • Addresses barriers to care by linking patients to internal and community resources;

  • Participates in care team huddles, meetings, and required training;

  • May lead group presentations and workshops on specialized topics including substance abuse, home management skills, job skills or health and nutrition to help individuals and families develop a healthier or more self-sufficient lifestyle;

  • May supervise clients during approved visitations or activities;

  • Assists departmental staff with various projects, hospital events and activities;

  • Answers phones, takes messages, organizes and schedules meetings;

  • Sorts, organizes and files documents; performs accurate and efficient data entry tasks;

  • Delivers exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and ensuring customer satisfaction; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge and abilities. The required knowledge and abilities also can be obtained by:

Three (3) years of public service experience or one year of experience equivalent to that of a Community Services Worker II.

Note: Public services are those services provided to the general public by a public non-profit community service organization or a governmental entity.

Substitution: Fifteen (15) semester units of college course work in social sciences, ethnic studies, communications, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of experience up to a total of one year.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: If there are three (3) or fewer qualified applicants, an oral exam will not be conducted. Instead, a score of seventy percent (70%) will be assigned to each application, and each applicant will be placed on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
