Empire State University is seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor of Special Education in our School for Graduate Studies. The successful candidate will work with students in the M.A.T. and M.Ed. in Special Education (all grades) programs and the area of expertise for this position is open to applicants whose research intersects special education in general, equity and social justice work as applied to special education, and/or dismantling ableism and discriminatory practices (P-12 and beyond). Responsibilities include teaching and advising in the Division of Education, working with the academic coordinator to develop online courses, sustaining a significant research program, and performing service as assigned. There may also be teaching and course development in other graduate education programs, as appropriate.

The School for Graduate Studies serves over 1,000 students per year in several degree and certificate programs offered in online and blended formats. The M.A.T. and M.Ed. in Special Education are fast-growing programs, and the incumbent will have the opportunity to serve as academic coordinator. Our faculty are committed to meeting the needs of students and are dedicated to mentoring, motivating, and supporting our graduate students through consistent advisement, engaging instruction, and continuous program improvement. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging across the faculty role.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university.

  • Minimum 3 years of classroom teaching experience in the area of Special Education for diverse learners and those with disabilities in schools and or community/clinical settings.

  • Teacher certification in P-12 Special Education.

  • College or university level teaching experience.

  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.

  • Ability to work in a dispersed faculty environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with teaching and mentoring in online learning environments.

  • Experience with academic program development.

  • Relevant industry and/or field experience.

  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.

  • Familiarity with current New York State teacher certification requirements and process.

  • Experience in building effective community-based and school partnerships/teaching placement in high-need special education settings with students and families from diverse backgrounds.

Special Information:

  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university-wide commitments.

  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.

  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis.

Rank/Salary: Tenure-track, assistant/associate professor, appointment and salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications.
