Porter County Municipal Airport Authority Line Technician/Airport Maintenance Worker in Valparaiso, Indiana
Incumbent serves as Line Technician/Airport Maintenance Worker for the Porter County Airport Authority, responsible for providing customer service, refueling aircraft, and maintaining airport grounds, equipment, facilities, and buildings.
DUTIES: Provides service to airport customers and passengers, including, but not limited to, selling fuel, oil and charts, towing and hangaring piston and turbine aircraft, providing information, answering questions, and resolving various problems.
Fills aircraft tanks with gasoline and oil, and records amounts utilized per aircraft. Preheats, de-ices and ground power starts aircraft as necessary.
Answers radio or telephone calls from aircraft arriving, departing and in flight, and provides meteorological, navigational and other information to pilots. Alerts designated emergency personnel by radio or telephone when aircraft experience flight difficulties, and responds to and assists as required during emergency situations.
Patrols airfield to ensure security of aircraft and facilities and safety of aircraft operations and the public. Replaces defective bulbs or burnt-out fuses in lighting equipment, such as landing and boundary lights.
Reviews maintenance records and inspects facilities to determine repair and maintenance needs, such as repair of asphalt and concrete runways, taxiways, and approaches, cleaning refueling equipment, repair of trucks, tractors and other equipment, and painting of buildings. Presents and maintains a clean, friendly, business environment in the terminal area for customers and the public.
Inspects buildings and hangars for fire hazards and violations of airport regulations, and examines firefighting equipment for malfunctions.
Maintains grounds, such as planting and/or removing flowers or bushes, trimming trees, cutting grass, spraying weeds, and plowing/clearing runways, taxiways, approaches, sidewalks and other areas.
Maintains required records/logs pertaining to sale of fuel, oil and charts, and maintenance and inspection of grounds, equipment, facilities, and buildings.
Maintains current knowledge of safety procedures, aircraft refueling and equipment usage.
Serves on 24-hour call for airport emergencies.
Performs related duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: High school diploma or GED.
Knowledge of and/or ability to learn airport operations and related maintenance tasks.
Ability to effectively perform the essential duties of the position, including fueling, towing and hangaring of aircraft, and inspecting and maintaining airport grounds, equipment, facilities, and buildings. Ability to effectively operate a variety of airport equipment and vehicles.
Ability to effectively and courteously communicate orally and in writing with customers and airport personnel, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to listen, comprehend, and condense large amounts of information during emergency situations and take appropriate action.
Must be self-motivated, conscientious, safety-minded, neat in appearance, and trustworthy, with ability to work alone and with others in a team effort toward achieving common goals and objectives of the airport.
Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation, with ability to prepare and maintain required reports. Basic knowledge of bookkeeping and ability to perform accurate arithmetic calculations for computing fuel usage.
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding airport and personal matters. Ability to serve on 24-hour call and work irregular and/or extended hours. Possession of a valid drivers license and demonstrated safe driving record.
RESPONSIBILITY: Incumbent is initially trained and guided by an experienced staff member. Guidelines are generally well-defined. Independent judgement is necessary to analyze and adapt guidelines to varied situations. Incumbents work performance directly affects overall airport operations and safety of airport users and the public.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Incumbent works closely with airport staff as a team member in carrying out line and maintenance duties. Incumbent maintains frequent contact with airport users and the public in exchanging information and rendering service. Incumbent reports directly to Airport Manager, Director of Operations, or other supervisors in the organization, as designated.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbents duties regularly require standing, sitting, bending, stooping, occasionally working in awkward positions or cramped areas, and using hands to grasp, handle, finger or feel objects, tools, or controls. Incumbent drives motor vehicles and operates a variety of equipment and tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent performs duties indoors and outdoors, and is exposed to all types of weather conditions, fumes, dust, noise, and equipment normally associated with airport operations. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self or others. Incumbent serves on 24-hour call and may work day, night and/or weekend hours.
