Nursing Director - Emergency Department - Full Time - Days

Department: EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

Job Summary

The Director of Nursing is responsible for the overall management, supervision and direction of all patient care units, services, and programs within assigned areas. The Director is also responsible for driving, supporting and modeling a service-oriented culture focused on quality, patient safety, service excellence, fiscal responsibility, employee engagement, performance improvement and the overall patient experience. Serves as the link between the leadership and patient care teams. Works under the general supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • As a Director, this position has responsibility for the activities and operations of an efficient, coordinated, competent, compassionate and customer focused care team. Ensures assignments and resources are efficiently utilized and distributed.

  • Supports the development and promulgation of professional standards of nursing practice for the hospital. Promotes understanding of nursing and patient care standards and regulations as integral to and supportive of professional practice.

  • Develops, maintains and evaluates systems that support the nursing process and the delivery of safe, effective and cost efficient patient care. Develops, implements and evaluates care processes and procedures pertinent to the patient populations served.

  • Leads efforts to develop and implement evidence-based clinical practice into daily practice.

  • Coordinates requirements for ongoing and new patient care programs, consistent with available resources.

  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies. Continuously monitors service operations and initiates changes as required.

  • Champions and promotes a culture of safety and quality performance improvement. Takes corrective action as indicated.

  • Develops and monitors budgets and expenses and ensures goals are met.

  • Evaluates staffing patterns, patient discharge and/or volume targets. Responds to market and environmental forces as they may impact the delivery of care.

  • Responsible for the professional development of self and staff. Promotes a learning environment that values, enriches and supports others. Completes continuing education/in-service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements and ensures staff participation in same.

  • Researches, develops, implements and communicates new protocols and procedures.

  • Promotes employee engagement and staff retention activities.

  • Makes decisions on staff hires, corrective actions, terminations, promotions and similar actions in partnership with Human Resources. Completes performance appraisals, staff incident reports, and ensures correction of deficiencies. Resolves staff issues and grievances in a fair, timely and consistent manner, also in partnership with HR.

  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with co-workers, patients, families/significant others, medical staff and visitors. Promotes open communication.

  • Ensures the delivery of age appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethical care for patients.

  • Shares in 24-hour responsibility for the unit(s) as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) or a Master’s degree Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.

  • Seven years of experience in nursing including four years of progressive health system management.

  • Demonstrated success in achieving a high level of patient and staff satisfaction in assigned areas.

  • Experience working with an innovative and effective professional practice model and patient care delivery system.

  • Strong financial management skills including the ability to effectively use productivity measurements.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate with all levels of staff using an open, visible and approachable style.

  • Demonstrated ability to be both a team leader and a team member and promote collaboration between nursing, physicians and other departments.

  • Experience in a union environment.

  • Experience working with hospital information systems with automated patient care management.

PREFERRED:

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

REQUIRED:

  • Active New York State Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
