ISGS is seeking to hire a Visiting Assistant Research Scientist, Process Engineer to conduct original research and technology development for ongoing projects related to critical mineral separation, refining, and process design. Conceive, recommend, and initiate new research in these areas. This position is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Duties and Responsibilities

Research

  • Perform experimental research for proof of scientific concepts and validation of material and process performance.
  • Manage projects to develop front engineering and design studies for future facilities for the extraction, separation, and production of rare earth elements and other critical minerals and materials.
  • Conduct laboratory analysis and characterization of materials or samples.
  • Participate in the design, assembly, operation, and maintenance of experimental equipment and facilities.
  • Perform techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment studies.
  • Prepare cost estimates following standard approaches (inc. factor and model-based estimation) and perform cost/value engineering studies.
  • Document, interpret, and analyze experimental data.
  • Prepare presentations, internal reports, and reports to sponsoring agencies.
  • Publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Identify emergent research needs and funding opportunities.
  • Develop or contribute as key personnel to new proposals in response to government and industrial funding opportunities.
  • Supervise, mentor, and lead hourly workers to achieve success and foster a culture of innovation and high-level performance at both individual and organizational levels.This includes task assignment, scheduling, ongoing performance management with coaching and feedback, and travel approval.
  • Ensure the safety of staff and equipment.

Engagement

  • Collaborate with PRI scientists, University of Illinois faculty, and external partners to provide interpretations and applications to existing and new research programs.
  • Respond to requests for information and provide technical expertise to PRI staff, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, academia, industry, and the general public.
  • Attend, participate in, and contribute to professional conferences and workshops.

Other

  • Perform other duties as needed to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
  • Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.

Qualifications

Required:

Master\'s degree in chemical, or metallurgical engineering or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. A minimum of three (3) years of related industry or research experience. Experience in process engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, mineralogy, or waste resource utilization. Experience with material characterization and chemical analysis. Ability to design, assemble, and operate e perimental facilities and equipment. Valid driver\'s license.

Preferred :

Ph.D. in chemical or metallurgical engineering or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Working knowledge of, and familiarity with, AACE cost estimation and cost/value engineering are highly desirable. A professional engineer license in the state of Illinois, or the ability to obtain such a license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and research experience in advanced materials processing for mineral separation/purification. Proficiency with process modeling software such as Aspen Plus or Prommis. Demonstrated track record for publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organization, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases.
