The Office of Facilities & Safety in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Junior Safety Engineer (College to Work) position. The College to Work Program allows students and recent graduates to learn on the job and gain the experience needed to transition to a regular position after a successful training period.

The selected candidate will learn to assist with the management of health and safety programs in the Grainger College of Engineering and provide risk management guidance and technical support to College units. They will learn to assist with the implementation of campus safety programs and provide services related to those programs. They will learn to serve as a key contributor to the College\'s \"Culture of Safety\" and Operational Excellence initiatives, working as part of a collaborative team of building managers, lab managers, faculty, staff, and students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Learns to assist with the implementation and management of safety programs in Integrated Safety and Facility Management (ISFM) units.

  • Participate in safety audits conducted by DRS, Division of Safety and Compliance and other campus safety departments. Follow-up to ensure corrective actions requested by campus-level safety organizations are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Assist with addressing findings brought to light by audits or reports by providing ongoing support during corrective actions phase through industrial hygiene monitoring, selection of appropriate control measures, liaison with appropriate vendors for product research, engineering design consultation and review, standard operating procedure development assistance and review, training, and other programmatic activities.
  • Assist with the fit-out of new spaces, facilities and/or equipment. Identify and communicate facility needs for new and/or existing equipment/procedures.
  • Update the Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAPs) as required by Campus Emergency Management.
  • Conduct safety inspections and audits in student machine shops, student design spaces and experiential learning activity areas managed by the Grainger College of Engineering, and create follow-up reports with recommended actions.
  • Provide training on truck and trailer driving and promote safe driving practices. Drive campus vehicles and tow the Engineering Student Projects Labs trailer, when needed.
  • Learn to develop, promote, facilitate, and conduct safety training using available Learning Management Systems.
  • Provide safety training and implement safety programs in student machine shops, student design spaces and experiential learning activity areas managed by the Grainger College of Engineering.
  • Assist with creating SOPs, JSAs, and other safety-related documentation for equipment and procedures in student machine shops, student design spaces and experiential learning activity areas managed by the Grainger College of Engineering.
  • Assist with the identification and disposal of hazardous materials for lab relocations or close-outs.

Learns to support College units with the management of campus-wide Occupational Health and Safety programs.

  • Inform and advise College units on campus-wide Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs including but not limited to Respiratory Protection, Machine Guarding, Crane and Hoist safety, Hearing Conservation, etc.
  • Perform hazard assessments in research laboratories, instructional laboratories, machin shops, student design and project spaces, offices, and other College locations for physical, chemical, ergonomic, psychological, and biological hazards to promote compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and campus policies, programs, and procedures.
  • Assist in reviewing and analyzing audit findings and incident reports to identify key areas of improvement and provide metrics on the performance of College-run safety programs.
  • Assist with the development of workshops, training sessions, or information campaigns to address gaps in safety knowledge and understanding.
  • Assist with the rollout of the College\'s chemical inventory program.
  • Assist in the operational risk management of College events such as Engineering Open House.

Learns to assist with the development of a Culture of Safety in Grainger Engineering.

Communicate safety and health issues to promote a safe, responsible, and healthful work environment for Grainger Engineering faculty, staff and students.

Inform and educate the College audience about Federal and State safety regulations and national consensus safety standards.

Participate on committees to provide safety expertise.

Provide input into safety policy creation and implementation of programs.

Assist with gathering information, developing, and updating content in the College Safety website and College-specific safety resources.
